Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar honored by comparisons to Arturo Gatti
Thursday Fight Night: TUF 3 champ Kendall Grove alive, kicking and with a new attitude
Diego Sanchez fought his rear end off last night in losing to Jake Ellenberger. The lead in to the fight was very revealing as Sanchez admitted he hadn't taken all elements of his career seriously enough. He seemed apologetic.
Just like the Season 1 "Ultimate Fighter" champion, Kendall Grove knows he's made mistakes along the way too, but he's not about to say he's sorry.
The headstrong Grove, who won TUF 3, is back fighting tonight in Las Vegas with a smaller promotion. Grove is headlining Superior Cage Combat 4 at the Orleans Arena. It's a solid card dotted with several UFC veterans. He may not be in the biggest show in the world, but Grove is happy with where he's at in his career.
"UFC was good, no doubt. But when I wanted to fight more it was 'no wait, wait. We'll tell you when you can fight.' It's more easier on my head," Grove told ESPN1100/98.9 FM. Don't get me wrong, I love competing with the best fighters in the world, but not all thebest fighters are in the UFC. There's other fighters out there."
Tonight, he faces another UFC veteran in Jay Silva (7-5, 0-2 UFC). He's looking for the finish. That's something he wasn't doing in his last few fights with the UFC.
"I kind of stalled in my UFC career ... just trying to survive and keep my job. I'm at the highest level, you don't want to go back down," said Grove. "That's where I messed up. I was just trying to survive."
Grove (14-9, 7-6 UFC) said in his mind he was a scrub and lucky to be there. His mindset has changed. He's fighting as often as possible. In fact the turnaround for this tilt was less than four weeks. Grove took out Japanese legend Ikuhisa Minowa back on Jan. 21 in Honolulu.
John Gunderson faces Justin Buchholz for the SCC lightweight title. TUF 13 alum Jamie Yager is also featured on the card. Two other UFC vets Terry Martin and Jesse Taylor were slated to square off, but the fight was canceled according to MMAWeekly.
SCC 4 weigh-in:
Kendall Grove (185) vs. Jay Silva (184) - Middleweight
John Gunderson (154.5) vs. Justin Buchholz (155) - Title fight
Danny Davis Jr. (170) vs. Jamie Yager (170) - Welterweight
Dominique Robinson (156) vs. Paulo Bananada (155) - Lightweight
Brandon Bender (145) vs. Shorty Weikel (144) -Bantamweight
Walt Harris (255) vs. Anthony Hamilton (265) - Heavyweight
Jimmy Jones (145) vs. Joao Victor (145) - Bantamweight

Machida, Jackson or wait: What to do with Dan Henderson?
Dan Henderson appears to be a man with a world of options. Comfortable at both light heavyweight and middleweight, his winning streak and credentials in both Strikeforce and the UFC qualify him for a title shot. After his epic bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Henderson said he wanted to try for a title at whatever weight is first.
[Related: Y! Sports pound-for-pound rankings]
Unfortunately for Henderson, the light heavyweight belt will be contested in April, and the middleweight belt is up for grabs in June. He is involved in neither fight. The UFC's solution was to offer him Lyoto Machida, a former champ who most recently lost to Jon Jones in December.
"He doesn't want to fight Machida," [UFC president Dana] White said following Wednesday's UFC on FUEL event. "He doesn't want to wait. He's going to have to wait. Who does he want to fight? I don't know what to do with Dan. Dan's either going to have to wait for Jones or wait for Silva. Or fight somebody else."
Except, Henderson says he was never offered that bout. Via his Twitter account, Henderson disputed White's words.
Was never offered Machida. And even though he has lost 3 out of his last 4, I'm sure it would be entertaining.
Who to believe between the two? Though, as Henderson says, a bout with Machida could be interesting for fans to watch, it doesn't make any sense for Henderson. Dating back to when he held the belt, Machida has losses to Rua, Jones, and Quinton Jackson. His one win was over a retiring Randy Couture.
[Video: Watch Jon Jones get attacked by a police dog]
A win over Machida would get Henderson no closer to the title shot. MMA Fighting's Mike Chiappetta suggests that Henderson takes on the winner of next week's bout between Ryan Bader and Jackson. Though a win over Jackson would avenge a loss on Henderson's record, it could also jeopardize a chance to win a belt off Silva or Jones.
As much as it pains Henderson to sit idle, his best bet is to wait. What would you do in Henderson's shoes? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Tennessee fights canceled after liquor license denied
For good or bad, alcohol is a part of every MMA event. Whether it's fans getting liquored up in the stands or people flocking to bars to see pay-per-views, alcohol is part of the fight world. Fight organizers in Tennessee didn't want to find out what MMA would be without it.
Extreme Fight Night had to return $6,200 in sponsorship dollars after his permit was denied in Gallatin, Tenn. The city claims they didn't approve the permit because it was designated for non-profit organizations only.
"They (the attendees) will bring beer in their cars, they will be drinking in the parking lot — we will have no control," said the company's marketing director, Christine Swartz, at the beer board hearing. "Whereas, if we sell beer within the venue, we have security; we can control that. If someone has more than one, or we think they're on the brink of a situation, we can physically have them removed."
The story ended well. Extreme Fight Night found another venue to run their fights that had beer. Fight fans had their cold beer in hand again. Phew.

What to look for: UFC on Fuel TV 1
The UFC rolls out its first major card debut tonight on Fuel TV in Omaha, Ne. Jake Ellenberger has a chance to work his way into the welterweight title mix with a big win over Diego Sanchez, but the card features much more beyond the main event (Fuel TV 8 p.m. ET).
The heavyweights are definitely can't miss this evening. Stefan Struve faces the division's great anamoly in Dave Herman. A chiseled 235 pounder Herman seems to fight with little strategy, but he is dangerous. He's mocked jiu-jitsu in the past. He'd better take it seriously against Struve, who has 15 submission wins in his 21 victories.
The other thing to watch for with Herman is what sort of look he brings to the Octagon tonight. Yesterday, he looked like a Russian lumberjack.
Ellenberger returns home
Sanchez will be walking into a road spot against Omaha's Ellenberger. The city is fired up for the return of the rising UFC star.
Today Ellenberger — born and bred in Omaha and the assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha — was presented with the Key to the City by David Dover, Deputy Chief of Staff to Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle. The former US Marine said: "I'm honored to be recognized by the city I grew up in and fight for. It's extra pressure to fight in your hometown with all your family and friends in the front row, but I know the support from the local fans will be awesome."
UFC looks to boost FUEL
The Fox deal was a no brainer for the promotion, but it does come with some early risks by using FUEL as its clearance house for programming.
Spike was in 100 million home. Fuel is still a work-in-progress with only 36 millions. That will get boosted into the mid-40's tonight due to a free preview this week. Unfortunately, like many young networks FUEL is fighting for clearance with cable companies. Comcast, the nation's biggest cable carrier, still doesn't offer the channel. That said, the Fox folks are enthused by the early uptick with the UFC partnership.
"We've had an 80 percent increase in the target demographic of men ages 18-49, and a near 230 percent increase in overall prime-time ratings from past ratings periods," Fuel TV vice president George Greenberg said. "To say I'm jacked would be putting it mildly."
Dillashaw needs a quick bounce back victory
The pre-show favorite for the 135-pound title on Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Dillashaw was surprised by the much smaller John Dodson in the final. He was finished on what he thought was a flash knockdown.
The powerful wrestler faces a challenge in the very rangy Walel Watson. He's not impressed.
"He's obviously going to be the tallest bantamweight I'll ever fight. He's got a long reach. Other than that, I don't find him too dangerous. Yeah, he's going to use his reach to his advantage, but he's not dangerous with it. He likes to stay on the outside obviously and use it to his advantage, but I'm not too impressed with his ground game or his [aggression]," Dillashaw told Sherdog.
The key phrase there is aggression. Watson's striking game can be dynamic, but he rarely sits down on his strikes. He is dangerous off his back which makes this fight really interesting since Dillashaw is probably going to look for the takedown and top control. He needs to be consistently active or he could get caught.

A UFC champ, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and an Emmy-winning actress met up at the Daytona 500 today. Jon Jones was an honorary race official, while Kate Upton and Jane Lynch were there to spend some time being awesome.
The race was delayed until Monday, so they had plenty of time to discuss throwing elbows, photoshoots, and wearing track suits. Hopefully, Lynch was offering "Bones" a cameo on "Glee." Nothing could prepare him better for his fight with Rashad Evans than a song and dance with New Directions.
Jones also got to meet some of the biggest names in racing: And he even got a car with his name on it.

Women’s star Rousey thinks commission testing for marijuana is flat out wrong
And you thought Ronda Rousey was a beast when she has a limb in her grasps. The real animal inside emerged recently when she was asked about Nick Diaz's positive test for marijuana following his fight at UFC 143.
Rousey is outraged that marijuana is part of athletic commissions' banned lists across the United States.
"The athletic commissions testing for marijuana is an invasion of privacy. I don't think that's constitutional at all. There's no real reason that they should be able to test and make the athletes conform to their political ideas," Rousey told MMAWeekly radio.
This was the second time Diaz tested positive in the state of Nevada. Due to attention deficit disorder, Diaz has a medical marijuana card in California, but that doesn't supersede commission policy. Rousey said that's Diaz's personal business and state commissions are poking their beaks where they don't belong.
"They have just as much of right to say that 'you know what? We don't believe that athletes should be promiscuous so we're going to start testing for genital herpes and genital warts,'" said Rousey.
Then Rousey went completely off the rails.
"'We're going to start testing women for birth control because we don't think you be having premarital sex,'" Rousey said. "They don't have a right to do it. It has nothing to do with sports."
Nevada State Athletic Commission chairman Keith Kizer disagrees.
"The drug is banned because of the damage it does to the person taking it. It could make you lethargic, slow your reflexes, and those are dangerous things in a combat sport," Kizer told the L.A. Times in 2009.
Apparently Rousey has never seen that explanation.
"Anyone who is stupid enough to say that smoking weed enhances your performance has never fougt or never smoked weed," Rousey said. "It actually lowers your testosterone. It doesn't help you in anyway at all."
Diaz is likely to appear in front of the commission in April. The normal suspension for a positive marijuana test is six months, but this is offense No. 2 for Diaz. Boxer Matt Vanda appeared for a second offense last month. He received a one-year suspension and was docked 40 percent of his purse.

UFC on Fuel TV 1 postfight: Dana White hammers himself and the NSAC
Dana White always says what's on his mind. He's not afraid to call someone out even if it's himself.
Seconds after Jake Ellenberger crawled across the finish line to win his three-round fight against Diego Sanchez, fans began asking "what happened to all UFC main events being five rounds?"
Fuel TV's Ariel Helwani asked White.
"Because we blew it. It should've been a five round fight. [...] I'm looking at the fight going ... 'yeah, this should've been five rounds.' I think that when Diego and Ellenberger went back in there for that fourth the place would've went crazy. People were ready for it at home," said White.
White wouldn't name names. He took the blame. He confirmed it was not Fuel TV's decision. More importantly, he said all main events will be five rounders. Back in June, White announced that would be the case for all main events. Somehow this fight slipped through the cracks.
White also commented on the latest with Nick Diaz's likely suspension coming from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He knows Diaz will probably get pounded and he has little problem with that.
"How about the Nevada State Athletic Commission royally kissed Floyd Mayweather's ass when he walked in there. This guy is going to jail," White said. "The judge is allowing him to not go to jail until he has his fight. Right?"
It still annoys White that Chael Sonnen was denied a license by the state to coach on "The Ultimate Fighter." Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather facing jail time had his jail arrival delayed and got a license from the commission to fight on May 5.
"You know how much money we bring into Las Vegas every year with the fights that we put on? You know how much we contribute to the city of Las Vegas? Do you think for a second if we had a fighter that was going to go to jail that the athletic commission would license him to fight so that the fight could go on? There's no way in hell," White said. "Am I the only guy on this [expletive] planet who thinks that's crazy? Seriously. It just blows my mind."
White was very complimentary of the effort turned in by Sanchez calling him a professional. When asked about the right weight class for Sanchez, White said he can fight anywhere he wants.
He wasn't so complimentary of Dave Herman. A chiseled, athletic heavyweight, Herman fought well in the first round but lacked focus to stick with a gameplan against Stefan Struve. The 6-foot-11 Struve eventually used his length and effective combinations to put Herman away. White didn't rip Herman's performance, but criticized his prefight antics.
"I like Dave Herman. The stuff that he pulled this week? I can't stand that stuff," White told Fuel TV.
That stuff was Herman growing a huge beard and then dying his beard and thick body hair all black. Not the biggest deal, but when you lose the way Herman did, it opens the door for the critics.
"Listen, if you want to get noticed ... get noticed for your fighting skills," White said. "Not for coming in like a gorilla or wearing pink scarfs. And coming in to "Macho Man?" As I was sitting there, I'm thinking 'did I seriously let him come into this song?'"
White said he's not anti-Village People, but he's not into the joking around.

More bang for your buck at UFC 144, but you have to stay up a little later
As hardcore MMA fans know, holding a fight card in Japan comes with plenty of challenges. The biggest hurdle to clear is the time difference. Watching DREAM and Sengoku on HDNet, fans are usually subjected to 3 a.m. ET starts and a finish around 6 a.m.
According to USA Today, the UFC didn't want to do that plus it would kill pay-per-view buys so the promotion came up with a solution of extending the PPV portion to four hours and seven fights.
The downside? That means the main event between UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and Benson Henderson won't start until 1 a.m. ET.
Rather than ask the audience in Japan to show up at an unusually early time for a sports event, UFC opted to shorten the preliminary card and lengthen the pay-per-view portion instead, said Anthony Evans, a spokesman for Zuffa.
The Saitama fight card will feature these fights on the PPV portion:
Frankie Edgar vs. Benson Henderson
Ryan Bader vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
Mark Hunt vs. Cheick Kongo
Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama vs. Jake Shields
Joe Lauzon vs. Anthony Pettis
Tim Boetsch vs. Yushin Okami

Stipe Miocic pounds Philip De Fries for quick KO victory at UFC on Fuel TV 1
Division 1 baseball and wrestling are on his resume, but if Stipe Miocic keeps going this way in mixed martial arts those accomplishments will be a footnote. The former elite athlete at Cleveland State put on a show on Fuel TV by finishing a fellow unbeaten Philip De Fries in just 43 seconds in Omaha, Ne.
After a plodding victory over Joey Beltran in his debut at UFC, Miocic looked to send a message here. He came out looking to bang and paid the price in the early seconds. Just 16 seconds in, De Fries (8-1, 1-1 UFC) drilled him with a three-punch combination. The Independence, Ohio native stood his ground stuffing a weak attempt at a clinch and reset himself.
Miocic (8-0. 2-0 UFC) landed a big right of own with 4:25 left that stopped De Fries in his tracks. A submission specialist, De Fries freaked out and tried to punch his way out of trouble. It didn't work. De Fries got pushed back into the cage when Miocic landed another big right. That was all it took. He dropped to his hands and his knees, and covered up. He didn't want to fight anymore, so referee Dan Miragliotta saved him after seven more shots.
Miocic's skill set is impressive. He was a high level college wrestler at 197 pounds and also played on the Cleveland State baseball team.
He's the rare wrestler, who also boxed at a young age. He's got a Golden Gloves title to his credit. At 29, he's getting a little bit of a late start to his MMA career, but it's also allowed to grow into his frame. The 6-foot-4, 240 pounder didn't have an ounce of fat on him. He continues the trend of new heavyweights, who are much more athletic than the big men of the part.
Dillashaw regains his status as a top 135-pound prospect to watch
The outcome of "The Ultimate Fighter" doesn't always predict who'll be the best fighter to come off the show. T.J. Dillashaw wasn't up to snuff at the TUF 14 Finale, but he more than made up for it tonight by putting on a clinch against Walel Watson. Dillashaw rolled with a unanimous decision victory, 30-25, 30-25 and 30-26.
Dillashaw, 25, destroyed Watson from the opening seconds. He scored two takedowns early and worked what appeared to be three nasty chokes. And that was all in the first round. In the second, Watson found himself on his back just 24 seconds in. By late in the second, he'd outstruck Watson 110-2.
At 5-11, Watson is extremely long for the division, but Dillashaw did a great job staying away from any submission predicaments by working mostly from half guard. He also mounted Watson on several occasions.
At the end of the fight, Dillashaw's advantage in the stats department was staggering. He outlanded 172-12.
TUF 12 champ Brookins looks explosive in easy victory over Rocha
If Jonathan Brookins can clean up one bugaboo in his game he has a chance to be a real player in the UFC's featherweight division. Brookins holds his chin a little too high, but it didn't matter tonight because he made such quick work of Vagner Rocha.
A flubbed Rocha takedown attempt turned into a dominant position for Brookins, who scored the rare top control knockout of Rocha at the 1:43 mark of the first round.
Rocha caught a Brookin kick and tried to drive forward to shoot for a double leg takedown. Brookins easily thwarted the attempt and pushed forward to get Rocha on his back. Instead of staying patient and protecting himself, the Brazilian started grasping at a leg to potentially attempt a knee bar and foot submission.
Brookins is too slick for that, so he started raining down right hands. the first three didn't land cleanly, but the fourth did. So much so that is appeared to knockout Rocha, who ate three more shots before the ref tossed Brookins to the side.

Roy Nelson is tough as hell, but it’s not enough to compete with Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143
LAS VEGAS -- Roy Nelson is slowly shedding the blubber around his midsection, but he still has a ways to go. Fabricio Werdum showed that tonight.
The Brazilian, fighting for the first time in the UFC since 2008, actually picked apart Nelson on the feet to cruise to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three cards.
"Roy is very tough and can endure a lot of beating, but I found his weak spots," said Werdum.
With a giant belly and a mullet, Nelson is the everyman, and the crowd at Mandalay Bay roared in approval of the Las Vegas native. He came into the fight at just 246 pounds, his lightest weight in years. But even minus the extra 20 pounds he used to fight with, Nelson was still taking big deep breaths midway through the second round. He was a sitting duck.
Werdum is generally regarded as one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu artists in the division, but no one's ever raved about his striking. He beat the heck out of Nelson on the feet. The 6-foot Nelson played perfectly into the 6-5 Werdum's gameplan of working head control to throw knees. Werdum opened a huge gash on Nelson's forehead.
"This fight was important to me. I trained hard every day for this fight. I had a good strategy going into the fight but the main thing for me was to come out with a victory," said Werdum. FightMetric had Werdum outlanding Nelson 91-26.
Nelson (16-7 , 3-3 UFC) took a beating to the chin and body along the cage over the first five minutes. It just got worse from there. An exhausted Nelson tried to throw the home run overhand right for the next 10 minutes. In doing so, he moved forward and kept ducking his head. Werdum landed more knees and pounded Nelson to the face with his jab.
Reality is that Nelson is a tweener. If he really got in great shape, he'd probably still weigh 220 pounds. That's too small for heavyweight and way too big for the 205-pound division. Werdum is a massive guy, but still quick enough to avoid the plodding Nelson.
"I never really dwell on losses. I think it makes you a better fighter depending on how you look at it. Yeah it sucks, but I'll get back in the gym and get better."
