Miguel Torres: ‘It’s not a comeback, it’s a homecoming’

The past 11 months haven't been great for former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres. In December, he was cut from the UFC for making a tasteless joke on Twitter. He was brought back for an April bout with Michael McDonald, and was knocked out in the first round. He was then cut from the UFC again.

Now, he has landed with the World Series of Fighting, the new promotion that will debut on NBC Sports Network this Saturday.

He talks about how he's still in the process of refining his game, going from the crazy and wild fighter WEC fans knew to the controlled, planning fighter he is working to be now. He also says he doesn't see Saturday's bout against Marlon Moraes as a comeback, but a homecoming. When Torres was with the WEC, he fought on Versus, the channel that was turned into NBC Sports.

Though he may say it's not a comeback, this is the kind of opportunity that can help Torres get his career back on track. He's on television again and fighting away from the UFC or WEC for the first time since 2007. It's a shot to remind MMA fans of the kind of fighter he can be.

UK fighter tries to fake a glove tap, gets knocked out (VIDEO)

At Absolute Adrenaline Platinum in Dorset, England, Adam Fyfe tried to pull the old-fake-a-glove-tap-and-go-in-for-the-knockout shtick. It didn't work. His opponent Alex Thorne recognized it, then came back to knock Fyfe out in 29 seconds.

Fyfe was never taught the old adage that cheaters never win, and winners never cheat.

By the way, eight days after Fyfe was knocked out here, he made his pro debut and was knocked out in less than a minute. The UK regularly hosts the UFC and will do so again in February for an event at Wembley Stadium. It has several burgeoning smaller promotions, but it looks like their regulation leaves much to be desired.

-- If you're lucky enough to have Fuel, you're going to have to set your alarm clock to see Saturday's fights live from Macau. The preliminary card starts at 7:15 a.m. ET, and the main card with Rich Franklin vs. Cung Le as the main event starts at 9 a.m. ET. However, there are worse ways to start your day than with some fights.

Miesha Tate pushes for Zoila Gurgel to get better Bellator billing

Former Strikeforce bantamweight champion Miesha Tate is not afraid to speak her mind. Last week, she caused a stir when she said there are circumstances where it's acceptable for a man to hit a woman. This week, she's speaking up on behalf of Bellator flyweight champion Zoila Gurgel.

Despite holding a belt and fighting near her hometown, Bellator has placed Gurgel's non-title bout with Casey Noland on the untelevised undercard. For good reason, Tate was annoyed by this and tweeted Bellator president Bjorn Rebney.

Tate sent several more tweets like these and encouraged her followers to tweet Bellator and Bjorn Rebney until they put Gurgel on the main card. Rebney explained his reasoning to MMA Fighting.

"Zoila's been plagued by injury after injury over the last 19 months, having not fought since March, 2011," he wrote. "We felt that the best road back for her did not include rushing her into a major fight against one of the top-ranked women in the world. This is not a world title fight as it's made significantly north of the 115 weight limit where she holds our title. Depending on how Zoila feels and performs on Friday, we can then determine the next appropriate step back."

But that doesn't explain why a champion isn't on television. Brian Rogers is not in a "world title fight," nor is he part of the Bellator tournament bouts that will be aired, but he's on the televised card. When fellow champions Michael Chandler and Ben Askren fought non-title bouts, their fights were on the main card.

When Tate spoke on men hitting women who hit them first, she was railing against a double standard. It looks like she's still fighting one this week.

Headbutt double knockout? Headbutt double knockout (VIDEO)

Double knockouts are already uncommon in MMA, but one happened in Poland over the weekend that is even more rare. Marcin Mencel and Mateusz Zawadzki headbutted each other, and their fight ended in a technical draw.

In case you weren't sure, that's why headbutts aren't allowed in MMA.

Well-known college basketball analyst rips MMA

Seth Davis, a college basketball analyst who works for CBS and Sports Illustrated, happened to catch pictures from UFC 154 this weekend. It was apparently too much for Davis, because he sent out these tweets to his 108,068 followers:

He later apologized and deleted the tweets, but his ignorant thoughts were out there. He could have taken the time to learn about the sport, about how MMA fighters take less blows to the head than boxers, or how many people love MMA. Instead, he took the low road.

Both of the outlets Davis works for cover MMA. CBS was the first network to air MMA when they were partnered with Elite XC. It would not have been difficult for Davis to learn about MMA.

Here's the thing: I don't like college basketball. When the rest of the country goes insane over March Madness, I head to the NCAA wrestling tournament. I'll watch my alma mater play out of loyalty, but that's about it.

But I don't deny that the athletes who play the sport are full of heart and athleticism. I don't rip it as something sexual, even when athletes find themselves tangled up when going for the ball. I don't make uneducated statements about who should or shouldn't be watching the game. I don't disrespect the athletes, coaches and fans who do care about the sport.

It was nice of Davis to apologize, but it's sad that he had to share these thoughts in the first place.

Election 2012: Georges St-Pierre or Carlos Condit?

With the election on Tuesday, you're likely sick of campaign commercials. Perhaps you change the channel when they come on, or you start watching shows after you've been recording for a few minutes so you can fast forward, or you start singing Spice Girls songs really loudly over the ads so you don't hear them. (Maybe that's just me.)

But these ads are worth your time. This November, you have to choose between two candidates: Carlos Condit and Georges St-Pierre. With Gil Melendez Hurt, Pat Healy Draws Jorge Masvidal for Strikeforce: Eh, Fuck It

Before we get into the Pat Healy/Jorge Masvidal booking --which we're sure will rustle your jimmies to no end -- we'd like to discuss the actual name Strikeforce has decided upon for its final event and how it more or less serves as a euphemism for Strikeforce as a company over the past couple years. Champions. They named the event Champions. It made sense originally, with nearly every one of their belts being on the line, meaningless as they were. But one groundbreaking signing and a slew of injuries later, and Strikeforce's final card -- their swan song, their dying epilogue, the culmination of years of blood, sweat, and tears -- will die a vapid, depleted shell of what it once was. Like Layne Staley.

Two of our title fights have been canceled. Daniel Cormier is fighting a complete wild card and it isn't even for the title. Is Nate Marquardt defending his newly earned welterweight title against Tarec Saffiedine? Who the hell cares; one of them is going down in the next week and you can mark my words on that. We may like to have our fun at Strikeforce's expense around here, but they deserved better than this. They gave us Gina Carano in a towel damn it. They gave us this gif of Ronda Rousey. Not to mention all of the less sexual, fight-related stuff they gave us, like Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley, Scott Smith's epic comebacks, and the God damned Nashville Brawl.

And now, they've been drained dry. Scott Coker had a milkshake, and Dana White had a milkshake and a straw, and Dana drank Coker's milkshake.

Ronda Rousey reportedly to be the first female UFC fighter

A report from TMZ says Ronda Rousey, the Strikeforce bantamweight champion, will be one of the first two women to fight in the Octagon. According to the report, Rousey will defend her title in the UFC in 2013.

Rousey has taken the fight world by storm since debuting as a pro in May of 2011. The 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in judo has six straight wins. All were first-round submissions. She has also reached levels of popularity only known to the most elite fighters. Rousey was on the cover of ESPN the Magazine's "Body Issue," and headlined two Strikeforce shows in 2012.

An opponent has not been named, but a rematch with Miesha Tate or a grudge match with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos are both possibilities.

The other wrinkle to TMZ's report is that the Strikeforce show on Jan. 12 will be the promotion's last. As we mentioned Thursday, the January fights will have every male Strikeforce champion defend his belt, so it would be a fitting end to the promotion. With Rousey, one of their most bankable stars, headed to Strikeforce's sister company, there won't be many draws left.

The latest on Ronda Rousey’s move to the UFC

Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey will soon join the UFC. In addition to confirming this news, UFC president Dana White recently shed more light on Ronda Rousey joining the UFC.

-- She's already considered a UFC champion. The UFC bantamweight women's championship belt is being fabricated for Rousey right now.

-- Don't expect her first fight to be against onetime Strikeforce featherweight Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. Santos learned from doctors that it would be a bad idea to cut down to bantamweight. White said that the UFC is doing a women's bantamweight division, so it looks like Santos is the odd woman out.

-- Rousey will make her debut with the UFC as the main event of a pay-per-view. She has already headlined cards for Strikeforce. A date hasn't been set, but White said soon.

Cindy Crawford once distracted Georges St-Pierre during a fight

If Carlos Condit wants to divert Georges St-Pierre's attention during their fight on Saturday night, he just needs to surround the octagon with beautiful women. GSP recently admitted his mind did wander once, and Cindy Crawford is to blame.

One time I was fighting against BJ Penn. I had his back against the fence. I'm not kidding you, for a few seconds I look and I was staring at a beautiful woman in the audience. It was ... uh ... (snaps fingers) Cindy Crawford. I stared at her. I'm thinking, 'My God, she's so beautiful. And she's looking at me.' And just next to her, I see her husband looking at me and I'm like, 'Oh my God. I can't look at her. Her husband's looking at me.' Now I'm thinking, 'Of course, they're looking at me. I'm doing the show right now and I'm in the middle of the fight.' So I'm like, 'Go back to your focus' (laughs).

Crawford, once one of the world's most well-known supermodels, is also a big UFC fan. An older video shows her getting Matt Hughes' signature on her chest, and she's been cageside for multiple UFC events.

There is no word on if she will be at UFC 154 this weekend, so Condit may want to have another plan in place than hoping GSP gets distracted. After all, GSP won both of his bouts against B.J. Penn.

UFC veteran Drew McFedries recovering from stabbing

UFC veteran Drew McFedries was stabbed over the weekend. He was released from the hospital after being stabbed in the side while working security at the Chorus Line, a gentlemen's club in Davenport, Iowa. Stabbing the security guard isn't very gentlemanly, but it is what Calvin Hammock allegedly did.

According to the Quad City Times, Hammock is charged with going armed with intent and willful injury causing bodily injury. Hammock allegedly left the Chorus Line, but was stopped by McFedries from coming back in. They got into a tussle, and that's when Hammock allegedly stabbed McFedries.

The good news is that McFedries is expected to fully recover. He hasn't fought since 2011, when he beat Garrett Olson in Pro Elite. His last UFC fight was a loss to Tomasz Drwal at UFC 103.

Patrick Cote takes controversial disqualification win over Alessio Sakara at UFC 154

Patrick Cote won via disqualification over Alessio Sakara at UFC 154 in a bout that will likely bring up questions of when a fight should be called a disqualification versus a no contest.

In the first round of the final preliminary bout in Montreal on Saturday night, Sakara knocked Cote down with sharp elbows. Cote fell to the ground and grabbed a single leg. Sakara rained down hammerfists, with several landing in the prohibited area in the back of the head. Cote went limp and the fight was stopped at 1:26.

Referee Dan Miragliotta consulted with the judges and Montreal athletic commission officials before the final decision was read. The crowd in Montreal booed relentlessly, only stopping to cheer when Canadian Cote's face was shown on the screen.

But they would soon be cheering as the fight was announced as a disqualification win for Cote. Miragliotta explained to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole that he warned Sakara twice to stop throwing the illegal hits. UFC vice president of regulatory affairs said Miragliotta consulted a replay and Montreal officials to call the fight a disqualification, which he is allowed to do by Montreal's rules.

It was a perfect use of instant replay, which is not used widely in MMA. But the question remains on if it should have been a disqualification, which is counted as a loss against Sakara's record, or a no contest, which isn't a win or a loss.

Boxing Legend Hector ‘Macho’ Camacho Dies at 50 Years Old

Camacho (white trunks) famously knocked out Sugar Ray Leonard in 1997. Leonard retired after the fight. Puerto Rican boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho, famous for his aggressive style and flamboyant behavior in and out of the ring, was declared dead earlier today in San Juan, four days after he and his friend were shot in a parked car in the city of Bayamon. Hector Camacho, who was taken off of life support earlier this morning, died of a heart attack shortly afterwards, according to Dr. Ernesto Torres of the Centro Médico trauma center. His friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, died immediately. Details regarding the shooting are still being kept quiet. However, police have confirmed that Mojica had nine bags of cocaine on him when he was shot and that a tenth bag was found open in the car. No arrests have been made, and according to police spokesman Alex Diaz, neither man was expecting the attack. Inside the ring, 'Macho' Camacho was one of the greatest to lace up the gloves. After winning three Golden Gloves titles as an amateur, he turned pro and quickly became a contender due to his aggressive, albeit cocky style of fighting. With Don King promoting him, Camacho would go on to win his first world title, the WBC Super Featherweight Championship, on Aug. 7, 1983. He would vacate the title to move up to lightweight two years later, capturing the WBC lightweight title by defeating Jose Luis Ramirez on August 10, 1985.

Undefeated fighter plans to get married, then fight on the same day

Louisiana fighter Kurt Holobaugh has had a very hot start to his mixed martial arts career. He has rattled off eight straight wins with seven professional fights and one amateur. To keep his hot streak going, Holobaugh will fight at Fight Force International's event in Biloxi, Miss., on Saturday.

Earlier that day, he has a little bit of business to take care of. He is going to get married on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The best part is that it was her idea.

"It was my wife's idea," Holobaugh told MMA Fighting. "Biloxi's a pretty city and she's a fan of the beach, so we're going to have a minister do a ceremony there. When we get home, we'll do a big reception and have family and team members down here. It should be good, it will be good to come home married and with a victory and celebrate."

Holobaugh is very smart to marry this woman. For the fighters out there, if you find a partner who shares your love of the sport so much that the wedding and a fight can fall on the same day, you lock it down.

Georges St-Pierre and Carlos Condit provided a main event thriller at UFC 154 on Saturday night. What other bright stars stood out?

No. 1 star -- Johny Hendricks: Everyone knows that Hendricks is a fantastic wrestler. He has the credentials and the skills. What he showed on Saturday was that he has knockout power by taking out Martin Kampmann with a single punch. Hendricks' last three fights include two knockouts in less than a minute, and a decision win over Josh Koscheck. Now, he has his sights set on the UFC welterweight belt.

No. 2 star -- Ivan Menjivar: People, just don't let your arm roam free around bantamweight Ivan Menjivar. Just don't do it. If you do, he will deftly slap an arm bar on you like he did on Azamat Gashimov, and your arm will not feel great for a long time.

No. 3 -- John Makdessi: Sam Stout went into this bout as the considerable favorite, but Makdessi took away Stout's advantage with a neverending jab. This win stopped a losing skid for Makdessi, and likely saved his job.

Former UFC fighter loses his house to fire on Thanksgiving

Former UFC fighter Dennis Hallman lost his home to a fire on Thanksgiving. The lightweight who has been fighting since 1996 shared the sad news on his Facebook page.

Sad thanks giving for me and my family. My house burned down early this AM. Thank God no one was hurt and I have that to be thankful for. Something like this makes my recent direction change all the harder...the one person that could make me feel okay about everything is no longer here. When God wants you to have a fresh start sometimes he really wants to make his point clear.

He and his family were unhurt, but a report on a fire at Hallman's address said it amounts to more than $180,000 in damage. The first floor was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.

It's been a rough stretch for the 36-year-old fighter. He blew weight for his UFC on FX 5 bout with Thiago Tavares. The bout was canceled after Hallman said he was not fit to fight and dealing with personal issues. He was then cut from the UFC.
