Eduardo Dantas and Alexander Gustafsson were the best of the weekend’s warriors

Eduardo Dantas leads off this week's edition of Weekend Warriors, your Monday morning look at the weekend's MMA. "Dudu" was the star of Bellator's show on Friday, choking Zach Makovsky unconscious in the second round of their title bout. With that win, Dantas became the new Bellator bantamweight champ and one of the hottest lighter weight prospects in MMA.

Marcos Galvao and Luis Nogueira both won their bantamweight semifinal tournament matches with unanimous decisions as they vie for the chance to face off with Dantas. In the featherweight tournament, an emotional Daniel Straus pummeled Mike Corey on the way to a unanimous decision win to earn a spot in the tourney final. Straus' training partner was killed in a car accident just a week ago. Staus will face Marlon Sandro for the featherweight tournament championship on May 11.

Gustafsson impresses in Sweden at UFC on Fuel 2

Alexander Gustafsson cemented his role as a top contender in the light heavyweight division with a convincing decision over Thiago Silva on Saturday. Brian Stann got back to his winning ways with a gentlemanly knockout of Alessio Sakara, and Dennis Siver got his first win at featherweight with a decision over Diego Nunes.

In his UFC debut Siyar Bahadurzada took home a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus for his 42-second KO of Paulo Thiago. John Maguire earned a Submission of the Night bonus for his armbar of Damarques Johnson. Brad Pickett and Damacio Page were given Fight of the Night honors for the back-and-forth battle that ended with Pickett finishing Page with a second-round rear naked choke.

Team Faber gets the edge

On "The Ultimate Fighter," Joe Proctor, a protege of UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon, helped Urijah Faber's team take the lead. Proctor took out Chris Tickle with a first-round rear naked choke. John Cofer from Team Faber will face Team Cruz's Vinc Pichel.

Jay Hieron is Officially a Free Agent, But it Wasn’t Cheap

(This is the last known photo taken of Jay Hieron before he was forced to cut off that thumb to fulfill contractual obligations.)  You gotta feel sorry for Jay Hieron. After a successful run through Bellator's season 4 welterweight tournament, he was given the chance to knock reigning champion and narcolepsy catalyst Ben Askren from his perennial throne at Bellator 56. The fight was close to say the least, but it was the general consensus that Hieron had done enough (ie. stop Askren's takedowns) to earn the title. The judges, however, saw things differently, awarding Askren the victory despite his usual lack of anything resembling offense. Sometimes these things happen in MMA. And just like that, Hieron's title hopes, and a ten fight win streak dating back to 2007, were destroyed. Cut to a year later. Hieron has requested time and time again for a rematch with Askren, only to be repeatedly denied by the Bellator brass, who informed him that if he is so desperate to get "Funky," he should sign up for the next tournament and try his luck. Hieron wasn't having it, and asked to be released from his contract. And although Bellator are likely dealing with some separation issues at the moment, they kindly obliged "The Thoroughbred"...on the grounds that he would return a significant amount of money first. Hear Hieron's side of the story after the jump.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: ‘Big Nog’s’ next bout, moving around title bouts, and Hector Lombard’s new home

Here's the latest in fights made and fighters signed by the UFC's yentes.

-- Somehow, not every heavyweight bout isn't on UFC 146. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will fight Cheick Kongo at UFC 149 in Calgary. This is Big Nog's first fight back since Frank Mir snapped his arm.

-- The moving around of title fights isn't over with Chael Sonnen's bout with Anderson Silva. Jose Aldo's title fight may move to UFC 147 in Brazil, which doesn't have a venue, and Dan Henderson may face Jon Jones for the UFC light heavyweight belt at UFC 149 in Calgary. With summer looming, few pay-per-view cards outside of UFC 148 in Las Vegas are set.

-- Though there isn't a fight yet scheduled for him, former Bellator champion Hector Lombard will make the move to the UFC. MMA Fighting found out from Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, and then Lombard confirmed the news on Twitter. His last loss was in 2006, and Rebney said he is confident Lombard will be the UFC middleweight champ.

-- Marcus LeVesseur will make his UFC debut against Cody McKenzie at UFC on Fuel 3 on May 15 in Virginia, taking the place of Aaron Riley. Wrestling fans will recognize LeVesseur as four-time D-III national champion. He's been fighting since 2003 and has a record of 21-5. TUF alum McKenzie is on a three-fight losing streak.

UPDATE: One more bout for your enjoyment. Mark Munoz will take on Chris Weidman at UFC on Fuel 4 on July 11. The just-announced event does not yet have a location, but is important in deciding who will fight for the middleweight belt next.

Reader Rants: Cagereaders take on the Olympics, Jon Jones/Muhammad Ali comparisons and advice for Rashad Evans

After you had plenty to say about Brock Lesnar, Brock Lesnar and Brock Lesnar last week, Cagereaders were a bit quieter this week. However, you still had plenty of opinions to share. Read on for the latest Reader Rants. If you want to join in, like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on stories. Also, we still are looking for your picks on the UFC 145 main card, so go like the page and tell us who you're picking and why.

MMA fans look at the idea of the sport in the Olympics with a bit of skepticism.

That would be very cool, but the Olympics is very heavy on safety. Probably it would be like combat sambo with the headgear and shin guards, and maybe an elbow pad. -- Gab'bo Hofileña Delgado

I can't see it happening. If all the title holders decided to fight in the Olympics that would mean 3-4 months with no title fights. It's hard to sell PPVs without title fights. -- Kevin Dailey

The UFC made another Jon Jones/Muhammad Ali comparison in a video posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page. Readers felt the comparison was a bit too early in Bones' career.

Purely fighting, okay, the comparison is fine. Young, talented, seemingly unstoppable. But Ali was culturally so much more than a boxer, and I like Jones but I don't see him as a cultural icon forty years after he stops fighting. -- John Wilcox

No offense to Bones, but that comparison doesn't fit as much to me as Ali to Anderson Silva. Same attitude, same long-term domination, not nearly the same cultural impact... but I think Silva would be the closest MMA fighter to compare to Ali. -- Jason Zachary

After hearing advice from Rashad Evans' mother on how to handle Jones, several Cagereaders offered their advice to Evans. Much of it is not very nice.

Fake an injury before the fight cuz jones is going to crush him. -- Doug Martin

The night before the fight, you pull a Tonya Harding! -- William Corral

Use plenty of ice for the swelling and lots of Kleenex to wipe your tears. -- Jimbo Thompson

Pictures of the Day: Rashad Evans and famous people

As Rashad Evans trained for this Saturday's title bout with Jon Jones, something about his camp attracted famous people.
Rashad Evans shared this picture of when football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin dropped by their camp. Do you think they're discussing the draft position of Chandler Jones?

During a trip to Puerto Rico, Evans met up with boxing legend Felix Trinidad. It was pretty rude to punch the camera, gentlemen.

Here, Evans is with Victoria Azarenka, the No. 1 ranked tennis player in the world and the winner of the 2012 Australian Open. As shown on "Primetime," he also was in the stands for one of her matches.
Before Evans' UFC 133 bout with Tito Ortiz, he picked up striking tips from another boxing legend. What advice do you thin Bernard Hopkins had for Evans?

Jon Jones has a new respect for Rashad Evans; why you should, too

After defending the UFC light heavyweight belt on Saturday over Rashad Evans, Jon Jones said he had a new respect for his former training partner and friend.

"I would say Rashad is my toughest fight to date, and a lot of it is because of how talented and awesome of a fighter he is," Jones said after beating Evans in a five-round decision.

Since winning and defending the title, Jones has finished former champs Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, and Lyoto Machida. Evans is the first fighter ever to force Jones into the fifth round, and the first fighter to require judges' cards since Stephan Bonnar in 2009. Evans was wobbled several times throughout the fight, but was still standing for the final horn.

Somehow, there were still fans who were unsatisfied with Saturday's main event. On Cagewriter's Facebook page, one reader said Evans had no heart. Another called the fight boring, while another claimed Evans didn't want the fight.

Seriously?

Evans trained for months and months to face a man he once called his friend. He cut down his weight, went through countless interviews, had cameras follow him around incessantly for "Primetime," then traveled to Atlanta and got in a cage with someone who is considered one of the world's best fighters. He withstood elbows, punches and kicks for 25 minutes. At the end of it all, he lost, but was still standing.

And there are actually fans who think Evans did not want to be in there? For the final word on the subject, let's hear from the great Baltimore boxer (and fictional character), Dennis "Cutty" Wise.

UFC VP says Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey helped bolster MMA’s hopes in New York

If, as it should be, mixed martial arts is ever legalized in New York, don't forget to give Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey her share of credit.

On April 18 in Albany, N.Y., the New York state Senate voted 43-14 to approve a bill that would legalize and regulate MMA in the state. It still needs to pass the Assembly and then be signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in order to become law.

The bill has passed the state Senate before, but this time around, said Marc Ratner, the UFC's vice president for governmental and regulatory affairs, the job was made much easier with Rousey's testimony.

"She got up there and she really made a great presentation and I think she had a significant impact," Ratner said. "We [as executives] can talk all we want to them about the positives of MMA, but to hear it from someone like her, a fighter, someone who is very articulate [and] who made her points very passionately, it definitely made a huge impact."

Rousey, who defeated Miesha Tate by, what else, an arm bar submission to win the title on March 3 in Columbus, was particularly effective when she spoke about what MMA has done for her. She won a bronze medal in judo in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, but said she would be struggling financially had she remained in that sport. She said she'd be losing money if she were a professional judoka.

Several senators approached her, she said, and told her her presentation changed their minds and caused them to vote in favor of the bill.

"MMA has a bad rap among some people," Rousey told Cagewriter. "It's marketed sometimes in a way that is not what the sport is. You hear the marketing, 'Two men enter. One man leaves,' but that's ridiculous. It's not what this sport is. They just do it to sound dramatic. It's like a movie preview. The whole movie isn't just running around and screaming and explosions, but they make it seem like that [in the trailer] so people go to the movie. There's a lot of quiet time and dialogue and there is a plot. What they're doing is like they're comparing a commercial for 'The Bourne Identity' to actually sitting there and watching it for two hours."

She spent time explaining the nuances of her specialty, the arm bar. She pointed out that she'd been arm barred "more times than I can count," and pointed out that she wasn't out snapping bones. She said she doesn't think she's ever broken an opponent's arm.

That, too, worked.

"I explained everything behind it and after I did, they were like, 'OK, that's no problem, it's not barbaric,'" Rousey said.

Her best point, though, may have been when she told the senators that there was actually already MMA going on in the state. She made them aware that there is a robust amateur scene there, but it isn't as safe for the fighters and the fighters aren't able to make a living, like they do when they're professionals and compete where the sport is regulated.

That point struck home with many of the lawmakers.

"In New York, you could fight and have people do MMA," she said. "But they have to do it without the proper medical checks. They have to do it without getting paid. They have to do it without any kind of regulation or oversight. [Amateur MMA in New York] is unsafe the way it is now, because they're missing all the things we have in pro MMA.

"We're not asking them to bring in a bunch of people and tell them to kill each other. That's not what's going on. That's how it was being presented. I wanted to point out that amateur MMA is here already, but we want to get it regulated so it's safe and there is regulation and it is safe and everyone gets paid for what they do. I want to be able to work in any state in my own country. Can you imagine, we're in 2012 and I still legally can't do my job anywhere I want in my country?"

The tens of millions of dollars poured into the legalization effort by UFC owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and president Dana White will be primarily responsible for MMA's passage in New York, if and when it occurs.

But Rousey's day on the hill shouldn't be forgotten. On that day, the lady was a champ when it came to wooing the legislators.

Rashad Evans vs. Jon Jones walkout shirts end in a draw

Rashad Evans and Jon Jones have spent a whole lot of time doing interviews, training, filming "Primetime," and doing public appearances heading into UFC 145. They have been busy, so they must not have had much time to spend on their walkout shirts.

If their shirts serve as a predictor of what Saturday night's bout will be like, we are in for a major letdown. Evans' Jaco shirt and Jones' shirt from the UFC are basic and don't even feature the fighter's names. Jones is made of moisture-wicking fabric, so it costs a bit more at $44.95. Evans' shirt features environmentally-friendly ink and costs $19.95.

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans make it official at UFC 145 weigh-ins (VIDEO)

Jon Jones and Rashad Evans got nose to nose as they faced off after they weighed in before their UFC 145 bout. Jones usually will look over the head of his opponent during a face-off, but looked Evans right in the eyes as Jones' brother, Baltimore Ravens player Arthur Jones, yelled. Both men were booed as they spoke briefly to the crowd.

The rest of the weigh-ins were uneventful. John Makdessi came in overweight and will pay 20 percent of his purse to Anthony Njokuani. Read on for complete results, thanks to the good people at MMA Junkie.

After the bout, the 21-year-old planned a g-rated celebration.

Crazy Story of the Day: Stephan Bonnar Detained in Bahrain, Bitten by Camel Spider

(Nope. Nothing suspicious here.)  Fact: Next to the DMV and Detroit, airports are the most terrible places on the face of our dying planet. Fact: Stephan Bonnar is a dog-fighting, gun-toting, BAMF who is not afraid to to stare Death in the eyes and wipe that bitchy smirk off his face. Being the "gives not a fuck" type of guy that "The American Pyscho" is, the MMA apparel company he co-founded, NGAUGE, have found themselves in quite a bit of hot water lately, mainly due to the "gives not a fuck" attitude of their "Trash Talkin Kids" t-shirt line. Perhaps you've heard of it. After getting into a little legal tossup with Josh Koscheck last summer, you would probably think that Bonnar's t-shirt based troubles were over. You would be wrong, and I would implore you to stop being so Goddamn ignorant. You see, alongside Rich Franklin and Keith Jardine, Bonnar was kind enough to travel all the way to Bahrain to visit some of the U.S. Troops recently. He was likely charming, and he likely brightened their day. But proving that no good deed goes unpunished, on Bonnar's way out of the country, he was detained by airport security, interrogated for over a day, and bitten by a poisonous camel spider before finally being allowed to leave. Why, you ask? Because apparently airport security didn't appreciate the subtlety of the Melvin Guillard "Young Assassin" shirt that Bonnar was wearing. He recounted the ridiculous story on Tuesday's episode of Inside MMA
We're getting ready to leave Bahrain, and I get detained at the airport. Jardine and Franklin get on the flight, and they take me in the room. They're asking me all these questions, and they're furious. One guy's comin' in the room and pointin' at me, all furious, like that. And, what I think is that, I had on the 'Young Assassin' shirt, with Melvin Guillard, and there's a guy with a turban with his brains spillin' out. I don't think they liked that too much.
Check out more from Bonnar's interview, along with a nasty photo of the spider bite and two video updates taken by Bonnar himself while the ordeal was occurring, after the jump.

Jon Jones keeps belt, baby brother Chandler steals it

Jon Jones kept his UFC championship belt at UFC 145 on Saturday night by beating Rashad Evans, but he couldn't hold onto it for much longer. Chandler Jones, a prospect in this week's NFL draft and Jon's baby brother, tweeted a picture of Jon with the belt. Minutes later, Chandler had it on.

Little brothers always have to play with their big brothers toys. It never fails.

Dana White says Greg Jackson exploited Jones-Evans situation for money

ATLANTA -- Greg Jackson is, arguably, the greatest active coach in mixed martial arts and responsible for the development of more high-level fighters than any other person. Jackson is an engaging, humble sort who has been heaped with praise for his calm, cool approach.

Jackson has taken a lot of criticism for his handling of the situation with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former champion Rashad Evans. The men will fight on Saturday in the main event of UFC 145 at Philips Arena, a fight neither of them really wants.

Evans blames Jackson. He says he warned Jackson several years ago about bringing Jones into camp at Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, N.M. Evans was a team leader at the time and took on a role of mentoring Jones, even though he insists he was wary about the relationship because he felt they may have to fight one day.

Jackson insisted it would be all right, and it was, until it wasn't. That came when Jones replaced an injured Evans in a title match last year against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and then said he'd consider a fight against Evans if UFC president Dana White insisted.

Evans left Jackson's at that point and created his own team, The Blackzilians, in Florida. But as tensions heated, Jackson changed his long stance that he wouldn't corner either man and opted to work with Jones against Evans. That, of course, didn't sit well with Evans, who talked about it to the UFC's Jon Anik on Ultimate Insider.

That's the big thing about it. That's why I feel so disrespected. It's like, 'So, now Greg, you're gonna go against me? You're gonna go against me, right? You gonna go against Georges St. Pierre? Oh, OK. You gonna bring in Carlos Condit? He helped make you too. So where does your loyalty lie?' So, if you're gonna go against the people that helped make you, and I was somebody like in Jon's position, I'd be like, 'Man, if he'll go against some people that were with him, to help him get his notoriety, to help him get where he is, then damn, what would he do to me?'

Jackson has taken full responsibility and issued a series of mea culpas. Speaking to MMA Weekly radio, Jackson said he isn't perfect and that the events that transpired were a mistake, not some sort of evil plot.

I always try to take my responsibility in every situation, even if it doesn't go well. There was a protocol thing that I've said before that I said was big, we should have had earlier on, and I think that's directly and 100-percent my fault that we didn't have a plan for when this stuff would happen. I take responsibility on that end of it, for sure. We weren't ready for it. A lot of people had to pay prices for that.

UFC president Dana White has a much different, more blunt take: Jackson did what he did for the money. Jackson, White said, is a businessman who benefits financially from having as many star fighters in his camp as possible.

White wasn't ripping Jackson for trying to make a living, but rather pointing out that fighters shouldn't buy Jackson's "family" approach as sincere. Jackson, White says, is simply doing what he does to make as much money as he can.

"There is one thing that is an absolute fact, and no matter how often Greg Jackson pumps that family [expletive], Greg Jackson is a [expletive] businessman," White told Cagewriter. "The more top guys he brings in, the more money he makes. There's nothing wrong with Greg Jackson, but he's a [expletive] businessman. Some of these fighters, who ought to know better but don't listen to that [expletive] and don't take it for the crock of [expletive] that it is. These guys need to make the decision where they train based on where they think they'll get the best work and develop the best, and not on this [expletive] crazy idea that you're becoming a part of a family.

"Greg Jackson [expletive] told Rashad this wouldn't happen, that they're family and all that other [expletive], but look what is going on now. Look and see who is at Jackson's and who is not. Train where you think it's going to be best for you and if that's Jackson's, that's fine. Just don't buy into this family [expletive] because there's nothing to it. This is the fight business, not the friend business."

UltimateBall mixes MMA, soccer, rugby, basketball and a dash of awesome

Did you ever watch soccer and think, "This really needs some takedowns?" Or rugby and think, "Why isn't this played in a cage?" Or basketball and think, "An armbar would have been perfect right there?" Good news. The people from Ultimate Challenge MMA came up with Ultimate Ball.

Watch the first minute to get an idea of the newest game that will clearly take the world by storm. Watch the entire video to get a good laugh in as the announcers don't even understand what's going on as they ask, "What's the score?" in the final minute.

UCMMA has big hopes for UltimateBall, as the description on the YouTube video suggests:

In 1993 they said that UFC will never take off, look at it now, UltimateBall is the sport of the future, this isn't just an MMA ad on this is a NEW sport in its own right.

True, but in the 1960s, jai alai organizers thought their sport would be bigger than baseball, but which sport had their big opening day last week? Still, good luck to UCMMA and UltimateBall. Chaos can be fun to watch.
