Travis Browne vs. Antonio Silva headlines UFC on FX 5 on Oct. 5 is a post from: MMA Interplay UFC News

The day begins early. The weigh-ins for Anthony Pipola's fight are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. sharp, and to get to there — Philadelphia — from here — New York City — in time means at least two hours of navigating rush hour traffic and toll roads. So we meet at Anthony's coach's place in Queens at 7:00 a.m. and set out, Anthony in the driver's seat and Steve Koepfer, Tyga Maclin and myself along for the ride. It's Friday. Ten or so hours after the weigh-ins are the fights — Matrix Fights, actually, a regional MMA organization maybe one rung below the events you'd see on FOX, Showtime or pay-per-view. And while the main event features a Bellator veteran and the co-main has a female Strikeforce veteran, somewhere tucked away on the undercard is Anthony's bout. Anthony is an amateur fighter. This will be only his second fight.
Nearly every weekend, regardless of whether there's a UFC or Strikeforce or Bellator on television, there's a regional show happening somewhere in the United States. For Philadelphia there's Matrix Fights, but take a drive down the Atlantic City Expressway and you could catch a Ring of Combat or Cage Fury Fighting Championship, and if you were in California or Florida, it could be a King of the Cage or Art of Fighting. The common denominator for them all is that each has local fighters, either amateur or pro, on their way up or on their way down, aspiring or expiring.
Koepfer, a.k.a. "Sambo Steve", runs the school that Anthony trains out of, where Anthony has trained for about a year and a half. There are others at the school, everyone from weekend warriors to pro fighters, and the weekly team gathering and the sparring it entails has been known to attract a cross-section of former Bellator champs, accomplished amateurs and rising stars. Tyga, who wrestled at Hunter College, is the school's wrestling coach. Many amateur fighters have family and friends who come out to see them compete, but the distance between Anthony's neighborhood in Queens and the City of Brotherly Love has made that impossible, so Sambo Steve and Tyga are all he's got. I'm just here to observe, to see things from the perspective of a fighter.
Snapshot of Anthony: he's not tall, but his broadness offsets his height, giving him the presence of someone strong and physical. He's a construction worker of sorts, his fulltime job involving working with ConEd to dig up cracked gas mains and repair them, and when he talks of his family — he's got a wife and three kids — he beams. His facial hair leans more towards "why bother shaving with a fight coming up?" than fashion statement. He didn't sleep much the night before, the accumulating anxiousness making slumber impossible, and that edge of exhaustion and nerves and weight cutting (Anthony is supposed to be 175 pounds; he was 172 when he last checked) is something that lurks close to the surface. Every once in while he unwraps a Jolly Rancher candy and pops it into his mouth.
"How you feeling?" I ask him after introducing myself from the backseat.
"Good," he says from behind the wheel of his SUV.
"Why'd you take a fight in Philly?" I ask.
"Because they offered it," he says.
For his first fight, which took place in May, Anthony and Sambo Steve drove seven hours to a suburb of Buffalo for a show called TNT Fights. Under current law, professional MMA competition is illegal in New York State, but the athletic commission has eased up on amateur mixed martial arts, and TNT Fights was New York's first sanctioned amateur MMA event in over a decade. Unfortunately, other than competing in local underground shows, if Anthony wants to fight it's easier for him to travel to New Jersey and Pennsylvania — neither of which require as much driving.
"Wouldn't you rather be fighting in New York?" I ask.
"[Expletive] yeah," he says. "I'd rather fight in New York. I'd rather fight on Queens Boulevard. I work overnight. [Expletive] this driving to Philly crap."
But we drive. And drive. Tyga, whose day job is at one of the Apple Stores in Manhattan, takes a conference call in the backseat. Sambo Steve plays old television theme songs on his phone, leaving us to guess which shows they're from. Anthony talks of Japanese MMA — apparently passion of his. The mood never once strays from being light. No one knows anything about the man Anthony is supposed to fight other than that he's from New Jersey and his name is Michael Roberts, and yet the lack of information doesn't seem to bother them. Then it's 9:30, and we're stuck in traffic on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. We're late.
Thankfully, when we get to the venue a half hour later, the weigh-ins are still underway. Unlike other commissions, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission allows for pro/am cards — fight cards that feature a mix of professional MMA bouts and amateur ones. The pros slated for tonight's Matrix Fights weighed in the night before. The amateurs get to do their thing the day of, without fanfare, the commission official telling them to complete some paperwork and step on the scale and that's it.
The venue is a union hall not too far from the heart of the city. The floor is carpeted, and rows of folding chairs surround the cage that's set up in the middle of a room that could fit somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 spectators. While Anthony weighs in and fills out forms, Sambo Steve and Tyga mingle with other coaches. A few feet away, one of the female fighters on the card is handed a store-bought pregnancy test to take (standard operating procedure for fighters of the fairer sex). Some mill about nervously. Others stare off into space and nod their heads to the music blaring in their headphones.
One hundred seventy-two pounds is Anthony's official weight. Andria the matchmaker tells us to come back at 6:00 p.m. The doors are scheduled to open to the public at 7:00 p.m., and first fight is scheduled for 8:00. It's only 10:30 a.m. now.
The first order business is to get Anthony some food, so we find him a place that serves breakfast, and eggs, pancakes, oatmeal and freshly-squeezed orange juice are scarfed down.
The chatter is constant, the talk hovering around Anthony's opponent (no one is completely sure who he was at the weigh-ins — was he that tall, muscle-bound dude? Was he the dark-skinned kid with the boxing coach? Was he even there?). It's a funny thing being a fighter's coach on the day of their fight, something akin to having a wife in the beginning stages of child birth. All the preparation — whether they're Lamaze breathing techniques or transitions into submissions — culminates into that one acute moment where the only thing that matters is the thing you're there for, and regardless of whether if it's happening in a delivery room or cage, the focus and singularity of purpose and words of encouragement in the ear are virtually interchangeable. "You're ready for this," says Sambo Steve, and "Just concentrate on what we worked on," says Tyga, and it's not impossible to imagine those words said to Anthony being said to a woman in the throes of labor.
After our meal we leave Anthony at his car, the idea being that he will nap and rest up. But that's folly, rest never comes. Anthony's going to be stepping into the cage in a few hours and stand before someone who wants nothing more than to punch his face in — how can he sleep?
For lack of nothing better to do, Sambo Steve, Tyga and I are at the movies, and it's there that Anthony finds us killing time. We watch some art house flick, some tear-jerker that is the farthest thing from violent and motivating and the kind of film that someone with a fight in a few hours would ever want to watch. Afterwards, we drive over to the venue and sit in the car in the parking lot.
The light mood from hours before has transformed into a tense silence. Battle is impending.
(End of Part 1. Tune in tomorrow for Part 2, because, you know, fighting and stuff.)

UFC 149 in Calgary has made more headlines for injuries than it did for high expectations. However, there are still important fights on Saturday in Calgary. They will answer these questions:
1. Does Urijah Faber have another title win in him? Perhaps because of his nickname "The California Kid," or perhaps because he looks so young, it's easy to forget Urijah Faber is 33 years old and has been fighting since 2003. With a shot at the bantamweight interim title on Saturday, Faber has a shot at what might be his last title run. Can he earn the belt, and with it, another shot at champion Dominick Cruz?
2. Is Hector Lombard the real deal? He has a record of 31-2-1, and hasn't lost since 2006. He blew through Bellator to get the middleweight title. Now, he's getting a shot at the UFC and its top-flight talent. Before he can be taken seriously as a contender for Anderson Silva's throne, he needs to get through Tim Boetsch.
3. Is Brian Ebersole ready for a jump in competition? If you were to make a list of UFC fighters with 50 or more UFC wins, would Ebersole be the first name to jump in your head? Because it should. He's 50-14-1, and hasn't lost since dropping a 2008 bout to the larger Lombard. With a win over James Head, Ebersole can leap into the proverbial title mix for a welterweight title.
4. Will fans still care about an injury-ravaged card? Remember when Jose Aldo and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua were on UFC 149? And Thiago Silva? And Michael Bisping and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira? The card presented on Saturday will look very different than the one fans expected. Canadian fans are known to be very loyal to MMA, but will they still turn out for Faber vs. Barao? And will fans buy the pay-per-view just a few weeks after shelling out cash for UFC 148 and Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva?

Hector Lombard came into UFC 149 riding a long win streak and an unstoppable hype train. He walked out of UFC 149 with a decision loss and a disappointed boss.
"It wasn't the fight I was expecting," UFC president Dana White admitted. "It just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Whether it was Boetsch or Lombard winning, I was expecting a real war. I thought this thing was going to be a war."
It was far from an exciting bout, as Lombard, known for his aggression and knockouts, showed little aggressiveness in the bout. White wondered if Octagon jitters got the best of Lombard, and also threw out the idea that middleweight is too big of a weight class.
"Lombard maybe should fight at 170," White said. "He made 185 easily. He's short and wide, but I think he could make 170."
In a Q and A before the UFC 149 weigh-ins, middleweight Michael Bisping made jokes about Lombard's height.
"I bumped into Hector Lombard in the elevator, and I thought someone was playing a practical joke. I was like, 'Who is this dwarf?' I think he's in the wrong weight class. I think he's in the 125 weight class."
At 5-foot-9, Lombard is one of the shortest middleweights in the division. Most 185ers in the UFC are at least six-foot. Champion Anderson Silva is 6-foot-2. Though fighters have overcome height and reach differences in bouts -- think Travis Browne knocking out Stefan Struve -- there is no reason for Lombard to come into the fight at a disadvantage if he is comfortable dropping down.
Should he drop down? Tell us your thoughts in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Ronda Rousey, the Strikeforce bantamweight champion, went to the ESPYs, a cable TV event, on Wednesday night. While on the red carpet, she was asked if there were any celebrities she would like to beat up. She names reality television and adult video-maker Kim Kardashian and explains why her about 30 seconds in. Rousey uses some very NSFW language.
It's good to know Rousey is using her powers for good, not evil. In the rest of her interview, Rousey said she had no idea she was going to be on the cover of ESPN the Magazine's Body issue, and has some unorthodox eating habits.

Daniel Cormier has his final Strikeforce opponent, and its a UFC heavyweight. According to USA Today, former champion Frank Mir will fight Cormier, the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ, in a yet-to-be announced Strikeforce event in October or November. The fight will air on Showtime.
Mir's manager tweeted, "@thefrankmir just asked me to tweet for him "that he's very excited about this opportunity and is very grateful to the @ufc for making this fight happen."
Mir last fought at UFC 146, where he was knocked out by Junior dos Santos in the second round of a championship bout. Before the loss to JDS, Mir had wins over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Roy Nelson and Mirko Filipovic.
The match-up is an interesting one for Mir to take, as he has had difficulty with wrestlers in the past. Of the three losses in his last 10 fights, two came to fighters with significant wrestling backgrounds. Cormier is a two-time Olympic wrestler.
He was the surprise winner of the grand prix that started with Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem as the favorites. He beat Antonio Silva and Josh Barnett on the way to the championship. His record now stands at 10-0. After this bout, Cormier is expected to join the UFC, like every other heavyweight on the Strikeforce roster.

The non-PPV portion of UFC 148 finished with two more decisions, meaning there were no stoppages on the preliminary card of Saturay night's bouts in Las Vegas.
Melvin Guillard looked close to finishing Fabricio Camoes in the first round of their bout, but the horn sounded before their fight was stopped. Guillard held on to win the decision 30-27 on all three cards. Khabib Nurmagomedov took a tight decision from Gleison Tibau, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.

Other than the announcement from Cesar Gracie that Nick Diaz would like to fight Fedor Emelianenko (or something like that), it seems the Olympics are garnering all the attention, with Quidditch and Battle Royale among today's events (go District 6! Wahoo!). But there is some solid MMA news out there, hidden among the headlines and blurbs, and because I like you, I went through the trouble of gathering it in one place for you to read. You're welcome.
Penn has been one of the more vocal voices when fighters have failed tests, always insisting his brand of fighting is 100 percent natural. On September 22 he and MacDonald will be totally clean, confirmed by the VADA.
That's it for now. If the stream is solid enough, I will be watching tonight's Invicta FC and tweeting about what I see. Follow or don't. It doesn't matter to me. I'm used to talking to myself.

In Monday's discussion of middleweights looking to inch closer to a shot at Anderson Silva and the championship, two names were not discussed: Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman. Since they already have a fight, they don't need to lobby for the right fight, like Michael Bisping, Alan Belcher and Brian Stann do.
They'll face each other on Wednesday night at UFC on Fuel 4. For Munoz, a win means a shot at Silva.
"With a win over Chris Weidman, I'm going to prove that I should have the title shot," Munoz told MMAjunkie.com Radio.
Weidman told MMA Fighting he is also seeking a title shot. After a lackluster win over Demian Maia in January, he wants to make it crystal clear he deserves the next shot at the belt.
"I'm fighting to make a statement in this fight," he said. "It would be my fifth win in the UFC in a row, I've fought a lot of tough guys, veterans in this sport. I really didn't have any easy fights, so I want to make a statement. I would love a chance against Anderson Silva, I think I really match up good against him, and I mean, I would love a shot, so we'll see. I really just want to make a statement in this fight. I want to make it blatantly obvious that I should be the one fighting Anderson Silva. That's the goal."
Both men have NCAA Division I wrestling backgrounds, though Munoz was a national champion for Oklahoma State while Weidman wrestled for less-acclaimed Hofstra. They are also coming in riding win streaks: four in a row for Munoz and five in a row for Weidman.

After winning a decision over Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce: Kennedy vs. Rockhold on Saturday night, Lorenz Larkin asked UFC president Dana White for a favor. During the postfight interview, Larkin got down on his knees and asked commentator Mauro Ranallo to join him there. Larkin then begged for equality among fighters, and asked that Strikeforce fighters receive fight night bonuses, like their UFC counterparts.
"We're your family, too," Larkin said.
Five and six-figure fight night bonuses are a norm for UFC fights. Bonuses are given out for the best submission, knockout and fight from each event. The extra money can turn out to be a financial boon for fighters. UFC heavyweight Pat Barry was six days from eviction and surviving on ketchup packets and rice when two bonuses for one fight came in.
[Also: Nate Marquardt KOs Tyron Woodley for Strikeforce welterweight title]
Though Strikeforce is also owned by Zuffa, the company which owns the UFC, the two groups are operated differently. Several UFC events are held every quarter, giving UFC fighters two or three fights a year. Strikeforce fighters are often waiting for months and months for their bouts.
Tim Kennedy, one of Saturday night's main eventers, waited a year for his bout, despite having no injuries holding him out of competition. Considering fighters only receive purses when they fight, how often they fight affects how much money they make.
Strikeforce fighter Tarec Saffiedine tweeted his support of Larkin, saying, "Ooooohhh yeaahh BONUSES! Thx u lorenz!"
UFC champion Georges St-Pierre once famously dropped to his knees in the cage to beg for a title shot. Larkin used the same ploy while pointing out it's not even about getting his own bonus, but it is about all fighters being treated fairly. It's sad that he even has to go to such lengths.
