UFC middleweight Brian Stann on verge of becoming a superstar, just not as a fighter
When the UFC announced its broadcast partnership with Fox and its family of networks a year ago, it was presented as an opportunity for the fighters to become stars. Who knew, though, that some of them would become bigger stars for their work behind the microphone than in the cage?
It is true, however. In the 10 months the UFC has aired content on Fox, FX and Fuel, it has become obvious that there is some serious broadcast talent within the ranks.
This is one man's opinion of the best of the best so far:
1. Brian Stann -- The UFC middleweight contender is poised, smooth, confident and insightful. It doesn't get much better than that for an expert analyst. Stann is so good in front of a camera, it obscures the work he does in the cage, where he is one of the sport's finest middleweights.
Stann the fighter is nowhere near as good as Stann the broadcaster. As a fighter, he's among the best in his weight class. As a broadcaster, he is easily without peer. He adds to the shows he's on without being obnoxious. He makes good points that aren't blatantly obvious, and he isn't afraid about pointing out mistakes a fighter is making.
The former Marine Corps captain and Navy quarterback has a lot going for him in his life and could choose to do one of any number of things when his fighting career is over.
But Stann is so good as a broadcaster, he's the kind of guy who could rise above just being an MMA analyst.
I could see Stann as he matures becoming a studio host in the mode of a Bob Costas, where he would work on a wide variety of sports.
2. Dominick Cruz -- The UFC bantamweight champion was brilliant as he provided analysis of Renan Barao's victory over Urijah Faber at UFC 149. He isn't as smooth or as polished as Stann, but he showed much potential.
He was comfortable in front of the camera and at ease delivering rather pointed opinions.
3. Kenny Florian -- The recently retired fighter is as versatile as they come, working as an analyst on live fights as well as in a studio. He is very good at both, though to nit pick a bit, he talks too much as a cageside analyst. A good cageside analyst should get in, make his point and get out. While Florian's points are all valid, he is a bit too verbose during fights.
In the studio, he's top notch and is perfectly suited as co-host of Fuel's "UFC Tonight." Florian is another guy who, like Stann, could develop as a broadcaster and be able to work as a host for sports other than MMA.
4. Rashad Evans -- The ex-light heavyweight champion has a good presence on television and a feel for what works on camera. He could stand to be more decisive and not hem and haw when he's giving an opinion, but Evans clearly has a future in broadcasting, if he chooses to pursue it.
I think he'd be outstanding one day as a cageside analyst given his knowledge of the game and his ability to think quickly on his feet.
5. Chael P. Sonnen -- Sonnen is good; quite good, in fact. But it's hard to live up to the standards he's set in his interviews. When he's not pulling off the pro wrestling style lines, he can come off as a little stiff.
That's not a criticism more than an acknowledgement that he's a rookie as an analyst. It's also a tribute to how good he is with his shtick on the fight side.
Sonnen, though, is very bright and with more experience, could wind up moving higher on the list.
There are other very talented potential broadcasters among UFC fighters. I think Frank Mir and Stephan Bonnar are fabulous, and I think if given a chance, so, too, would Ronda Rousey.
It's clear, though, that the Fox deal isn't just benefiting the bottom line for UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC president Dana White. It's also doing a lot to help prepare some of their fighters for their post-career careers.

Strikeforce’s Three Stars: Ronda Rousey, Ronaldo Souza and Miesha Tate
After an exciting night of fights, Ronda Rousey still distinguished herself as the biggest star. Here are Cagewriter's picks for Saturday night's three stars. Tell us yours in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
No. 1 star -- Ronda Rousey: What is there left to say about Rousey? She got Kaufman to the ground with ease and threw an armbar on in less than a minute. Before Saturday, Kaufman had only lost once. Rousey then turned her sights on Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, telling the former featherweight champ to come down to bantamweight. If it's physically possible for Cyborg to do is a discussion for another day. For now, just enjoy every part of Rousey's blistering performance.
No. 2 star -- Ronaldo Souza: With "Jacare's" world-class grappling credentials, it's easy to forget he has power in his hands, too. He quickly reminded Derek Brunson and everyone watching with a 41-second knockout.
No. 3 star -- Miesha Tate: One of the best fights of the night was on the prelims, as Miesha Tate and Julie Kedzie put on a memorable fight for three rounds. Tate was on the wrong end of an armbar in her last fight, but must have learned something about the submission move as she used it to submit Kedzie in the third round.

Chael Sonnen’s pizzeria selling the Jon Jones special — full of chicken and cheese
Jon Jones' refusal of a bout with Chael Sonnen may have led to a cancellation of fights set for Saturday night, but it also led to a whole new pizza at Sonnen's Mean Streets Pizza. TMZ found Sonnen's pizzeria has a whole new pizza in Jones' honor.
Though it doesn't sound particularly appetizing, the pizza is full of chicken and cheese. Sonnen throws two more barbs at Jones by saying the deal is only good until "the chicken runs out," and offers delivery so to "avoid a DUI." Jones crashed his Bentley into a tree when driving drunk in May.

Benson Henderson’s title defense, B.J. Penn vs. Rory MacDonald and ‘Shogun’ vs. ‘Mauler’ will headline UFC on Fox 5
The last two UFC on Fox 5 cards have been lackluster, and there hasn't been a title fight on the network since the UFC's debut there. UFC on Fox 5 will change those two trends. USA Today reports the next network show will be on Dec. 8 at a site to be determined.
The three fights added to the show's slate:
-- Benson Henderson will defend his lightweight heavyweight (Ed. note -- Sorry, still recovering from Olympics) belt against Nate Diaz, who is riding a three-fight win streak. Diaz earned the title shot with a submission of Jim Miller in May.
-- In the co-main event, Alexander Gustafsson will fight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Gustafsson has five wins in a row at light heavyweight, but has been ignored by the UFC for a title shot. Perhaps a win over Shogun, who just beat Brandon Vera on the last Fox card, will do the trick.
-- B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald's bout, which was postponed because of a cut MacDonald sustained in training, was rescheduled to this card.
With a title fight, a possible title contender's fight and the mainstream starpower of Penn, the UFC is giving Fox a welcome change from the less-than-thrilling recent cards. Though the UFC reported an increase in ratings from their May show to the August one, it was modest. The May show also experienced a steep drop-off in ratings from the two previous shows on Fox, so the improvement shown on the August show still didn't get the UFC anywhere near the four million viewers who watched the first two UFC on Fox shows.

One-Handed Fighter Nick Newell Scores Knockout (VIDEO)
While most of us had our attention focused on UFC on FOX 4 on Saturday night, Nick Newell was stepping into the cage at a minor league event called Xtreme Fighting Championships and scoring a knockout. While such occurrences are not uncommon at the smaller shows that happen every weekend across the United States, what makes this one remarkable is the man earning the KO: Newell's left arm ends just past the elbow. Newell, a Massachusetts native and former high school wrestler, is now 8-0 as a pro, and the win puts him line for a crack at the XFC lightweight title.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: What happened to the UFC 151 bouts, and Sarah Kaufman’s next bout
With UFC 151's cancellation, the UFC had to do a ton of scrambling to move the fights that didn't involve Dan Henderson or Jon Jones to other fight cards.
-- Kyle Noke and Charlie Brenneman's fight was moved to UFC 152 after Dan Miller's fight with Sean Pierson was canceled for a really good reason. Miller's son will finally get a kidney transplant in mid-September.
-- Several UFC 151 fights were shifted to UFC on FX 5. Dennis Hallman vs. Thiago Tavares, Danny Castillo vs. Michael Johnson, Shane Roller vs. Jacob Volkmann was all moved to the October 5 fights in Minneapolis.
-- Takeya Mizugaki's bout with Jeff Hoaglund and Yasuhiro Urushitani's fight with Jeff Lineker will move to UFC on Fuel in 6, which is taking place on Nov. 10 in Macau.
-- Alan Belcher's injury and Vitor Belfort's fight with Jon Jones forces their fight off of UFC 153. Phil Davis' bout with Wagner Prado was promoted to the main card.
-- In non-UFC fight booking news, former Strikeforce bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman will fight Kaitlin Young at Invicta's next bouts on October 6. Kaufman's fight will be a one-time deal for her to fight on Invicta's all-female card.

Randy Couture isn’t planning a return to the cage, unless Steven Seagal gets in first
You will be disappointed if you want to see UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture fight again. He is focused on his movie career, and recently told me he is starting to feel more like an actor and less like a professional athlete.
"I still feel like a professional athlete. That's slowly, I think, changing. I'm starting to get recognized for my movies. Hopefully, being considered by the industry as a bona fide actor. That's a transition I'm embracing."
But there just may be one challenge who could bring Couture back to the cage. On G4's "Attack of the Show," he said:
"Not unless (Steven) Seagal wants to sign up," Couture answered with a smile and a laugh.
Though Couture was joking, oh please oh please oh please can this happen? Seagal claims to have taught Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida some of their best moves. In fact, he claimed the kick Machida used to knock out Couture in his last fight. In a cage with Couture, Seagal would have to back up everything he's said about teaching some of MMA's best fighters.
Plus, it would be one heck of a way to sell a movie.

Dennis Bermudez is Unstoppable: The UFC 150 Preliminary Card Rundown
It was a record-setting preliminary card for UFC 150, with history made in the speed and ferocity with which leather was thrown. In the bantamweight division, a Greg Jackson-trained fighter won big, while an Octagon newcomer dominated. And in the featherweight division, a TUF 14 star shined, while a former lightweight found that he should've been fighting other 145-pounders all along.
[Related: Erik Perez scores fastest KO in bantamweight history]
- In the first fight of the evening, Japanese veteran Eiji Mitsuoka and Nik Lentz met in the cage for a featherweight contest that saw the American dominate Mitsuoka with wrestling from beginning to end. In his first fight at 145 pounds, Lentz was strong — way stronger than his opponent — and Mitsuoka had no answer for the takedowns and throws that put him on the mat. The end came when Lentz maneuvered onto Mitsuoka's back, flattened him out, and unloaded a barrage of fists that forced the referee to step in at 3:45 of Round One.
- It was all about momentum in the bantamweight pairing between TUF 14 veteran Dustin Pague and Octagon rookie Chico Camus, and though Pague was dangerous early on with a first-round triangle choke that his foe had to work to avoid, Camus slowly but surely gathered steam with escapes and ground and pound. This went on for all three rounds, and by the time the clock was ticking down to zero, Camus was in mount and back-mount and Pague was completely on the defensive. Camus took the well-earned unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).
- Bantamweight fireball Erik Perez walked right through Ken Stone, striding boldly into their first and only exchange and dropping Stone with a right hook that had the Massachusetts-born fighter eating canvas. Perez followed him down and kept punching, and when Stone went rigid referee Herb Dean jumped in. Stone was so dazed that when Perez relented and turned away, he tried to keep fighting, and Dean had to physically restrain him while Perez celebrated. At a mere 17 seconds, Perez was the owner of the fastest knockout (a TKO) in WEC and UFC bantamweight history.
- Dutch judoka Michael Kuiper absolutely brutalized kickboxer Jared Hamman, even though his game plan seemed to involve a lot of strolling forward eating kicks and punches. Fleet-footed and mobile, Hamman began strong. But Kuiper buckled him with a leg-kick that seemed to incur lasting damage, and then came the punches that chipped away and chipped away until Hamman came to resemble an extra in "The Walking Dead". The end came via TKO at 2:16 in Round Two, when Kuiper cracked Hamman and Hamman fell in a heap.
- Things looked dire for Dennis Bermudez when Tommy Hayden nailed him with a knee and sent him stunned to the canvas, but the TUF 14 runner-up is apparently made of iron. Recovering from the knee to the dome and then forced to wiggle out of a rear naked choke and slam his way out of an armbar attempt, Bermudez just couldn't be stopped, and he paid Hayden back with a crushing front kick to the chest and standing guillotine choke. Hayden tapped out at 4:43 of the first round.

LL Cool J, the actor and rapper, recently stopped by Jackson's MMA, the gym that trains Jon Jones, Donald Cerrone, Clay Guida and many more UFC stars. Yes, two people allegedly broke into an MMA gym, unaware that fighters were still inside. One tried to break inside, but ran away when he saw people still inside. According to KSAT.com, Karl Rogers and Adrian Sanchez were apprehended by San Antonio police.
The real stupidity is choosing a fight gym as a target in the first place. Gyms don't normally deal with a ton of cash, and any item of value would be large and difficult to move. Oh, and there may be trained fighters waiting for you.

Former UFC fighter Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller arrested, caught naked in church
Former UFC and Strikeforce fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller was arrested Monday in Mission Viejo , Calif., after allegedly breaking into a church and vandalizing it with a fire extinguisher. Police responding to the call reportedly found Miller sitting on a couch, naked but coherent. He was taken into custody and charged with suspicion of burglary, and is undergoing a mental evaluation.
Miller found limited success in his time in the Octagon but was considered one of the sport's most colorful personalities. He was also the host of MTV's popular reality show "Bully Beatdown." Miller publicly retired from competition in May of this year after a lackluster performance at UFC 146 led to him to being fired. Since then, he's tried his hand at stand-up comedy, and last week he engaged in an argument with UFC president Dana White over Twitter, where he said "Kill yourself @danawhite we are all begging you."

Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar: The UFC 150 Postscript
On Saturday night, we tuned in to the UFC 150 pay-per-view broadcast to witness some high-level MMA action. And sure, we certainly got that. But what we didn't count on was the heaping dose of controversy surrounding the decision in the main event between UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar. Wait, did I say "controversy"? What I meant was "robbery". "Farce". "Comedy of errors". "Screwjob". Anyway, here's a nice, little UFC 150 postscript post, so you and I can vent our churning emotions and save money on seeing a licensed therapist.
- Judge Tony Weeks gave Edgar Rounds Two, Three, Four and Five; judges Dave Hagen and Mark Van Tine had Henderson taking Rounds One, Three and Four. I agree that the champ took the first round, and I felt that maybe, just maybe, Henderson also took the third. Round Four, though? Edgar was lighting Henderson up, got him to the ground, and threatened to finish him whenever he shifted from that front face-lock to a guillotine. Edgar at least took three of the five rounds. Anything else is just state-sanctioned blindness.
- Where does Edgar go from here? With Nate Diaz getting the next crack at the belt, and UFC president Dana White saying that if Edgar moves down to featherweight he does not get an immediate shot at champ Jose Aldo, "The Answer" is stuck in this nebulous realm where he's better than all the other contenders but doesn't get to be a contender himself. And while we're on the subject, if the Edgar that fought Henderson last night were to fight Aldo, Aldo would be an exhausted mess by Round Four and an unconscious mess by Round Five.
- Melvin Guillard is so dangerous, yet so flawed. He will always be fun to watch, and for that he's worth his weight in gold hair dye, but it's hard to imagine him moving any further up the rankings.
- Former Strikeforce champ Jake Shields has become the very definition of "letdown". And I say this as someone who fully believed that, going into his bout against welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre, he was going to submit the Canadian with ease. Shields is like a bigger version of Rani Yahya, only with Yahya, we at least get some finishes once in a while.
- Yushin Okami struggled way too hard with Buddy Roberts. Has the Japanese middleweight's time in the sun passed? Are we just going to see him decline from here on out?
- When Jared Hamman said to his cornermen between rounds that he'd hurt his leg, don't you think it was their duty to stop the fight? Hamman had no chance once he was injured. Going out for that second round took guts and heart and major cojones, but getting what could be lasting damage for nothing isn't worth the accolades.
- With the way he absolutely dominated the veteran Eiji Mitsuoka, Nik Lentz is a dingbat for not cutting down to featherweight sooner. Who did he think he was when he was fighting at lightweight? Frankie Edgar?

UFC on FOX 4 Weigh-Ins Go Off Without a Hitch
Sometimes something interesting happens at the weigh-ins for a MMA event, like maybe there's a scuffle or someone misses weight badly or, as was the case with EliteXC's "Heat" show, Gina Carano has to strip down to nothing to get the scale where it needs to be. But the weigh-ins for UFC on FOX 4, which took place earlier today at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, went off without a hitch. There was no bad blood, so after their staredowns, every fighter shook hands and hugged. No one stepped onto the scale sporting excess baggage. And alas, no Carano. It all went smoothly. Now everything is set for Saturday night's event on FOX.
If watching emaciated dudes doff their duds while Joe Rogan and Dana White stand idly by holds any interest to you, a vid of the weigh-ins can be found here. Otherwise, see you tomorrow!

Frankie Edgar, Rich Franklin, UFC on FOX 4: The Morning News Roundup – 8.6.12
And just as one fight week ends, another begins. Last week, we had the buildup to UFC on FOX 4, which on Saturday night gave us the next light-heavyweight challenger to the belt. This week we have UFC 150 on tap, which will see the rematch between UFC lightweight champ Benson Henderson and former champ Frankie Edgar. So, you ready for another round of UFC-flavored news tidbits leading up to a night of action? I know I am.
- The first shot across the bow in terms of UFC 150 interviews is one with Frankie Edgar, fired by the cannon manned by MMAWeekly.
"It definitely doesn't feel right," Edgar said about not being champion when speaking to MMAWeekly Radio. "Especially when people say 'former UFC world champion'. You try not to put everything on world titles and whatnot, but being champ is nice."
Edgar gets to rectify the situation on Saturday. Think he can do it?
- Former UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin is fighting former Strikeforce star Cung Le at UFC on Fuel TV 6, which will take place on November 10 in Macau (which is a Las Vegas-type island right outside of China). Having Le on the card seemed like a no-brainer, but it appeared as if he'd broken his foot defeating Patrick Cote at UFC 148; I guess his foot will be okay in time for Franklin.
- The ratings are in for UFC on FOX 4, and though the show ended up being a stellar example of how exciting a UFC event can be, the event did go up against the Olympics and the numbers reflect that. MMAPayout is reporting an average of 2.14 viewers, which makes the event the lowest-rated of the four UFCs that have aired on FOX.
That's it for now. Follow me on Twitter here.

Swedish UFC fighter Reza Madadi is on a huge win streak. His victories include wins over Yoislandy Izquierdo, Rich Clementi, Carlo Prater and death. He saved a drowning toddler and his father in Sweden on Aug. 3.
After kayaking in the Stockholm Archipelago, he was headed to lunch when he saw a 1-year-old fall off of a pier into the water. The child's father jumped in after his son. Instinct kicked in for Madadi, who once trained to be a firefighter, and he jumped in after the father.
"Everyone just panicked but I didn't even think, I just acted on instinct," Madadi said. "I could tell the man was very upset, but at the same time relieved. It's easier said than done to act fast in situations like these. The problem is that many people start to think, but there is no time for thinking."
Madadi brought them to safety. The coolest part of the report is that when people who were watching from the shore asked to take a picture of Madadi with the family, he said no out of respect of the shaken up family.
Fighters have been in the life-saving business before. Nick Ring came to the aid of a couple being mugged in Calgary. Jon Jones did the same the morning he won the UFC light heavyweight belt.

UFC 150 Preview: The Main Card Breakdown
Because the area was a lawless wasteland, the first two UFCs ever were held in Denver, Colorado. It was an interesting time back then in the winter of 1993: as a chill hung over the McNichols Sports Arena, within a sumo wrestler was literally getting his teeth kicked out while a bunch of other combat sports newbies were huffing and puffing and on the verge of altitude sickness. Denver, you see, is so far above sea level that flying birds are in danger of inadvertently leaving Earth's atmosphere. The UFC has returned to the area many times since, and on Saturday night will be holding UFC 150 there. So who on the main card will be fully acclimated to the thin air and who will look like they're suffering from asthma? Here's a breakdown of the fights to tell you that very thing!
[Listen: Benson Henderson talks with Ariel Helwani about the rematch]
- Benson Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar — Edgar became the UFC's lightweight champ after he went five rounds with B.J. Penn. Then he fought Penn for five rounds again, fought Gray Maynard a couple times for a total of nine rounds, and faced former WEC star Henderson, who took the belt from him after another protracted five-round war. To say that Edgar spends a lot of time in the Octagon is an understatement. It would be more accurate to say that he lives in the Octagon, and that UFC president Dana White has often floated the idea of charging the New Jersey-based fighter rent. Unless he can nail a guillotine choke, Henderson is pretty much a decision-type guy as well, so what this one boils down to is who made the best adjustments from their last fight. Has Edgar trained to avoid those up-kicks that wrecked his nose (an injury that required surgery and forced the postponement of this rematch earlier in the year)? Will Henderson continue to throw kicks that Edgar catches and use the opportunity to punch him repeatedly in the face while Edgar stands there holding his leg (which happened last time)? If adjustments have been made, I can see the "Answer" racking up enough points to take the decision over "Smooth". Either way, though, this one is going the distance. Oh, and both men will be in great shape.
- Don Cerrone vs. Melvin Guillard — When it comes to knocking people out, lightweight "The Ultimate Fighter — Season Two" veteran Guillard is king. Unfortunately, when it comes to defending submissions, the "Young Assassin" is like a knave or squire, or perhaps even just a scullery maid. But fear not! For although former WEC star Cerrone is great at grappling, he's also great at standing and banging — which is hopefully what we'll get for at least the first few minutes of this co-main event hoedown. Granted, once things get too hairy for him on the feet, "Cowboy" can flip the switch, take things horizontal and tap Guillard out, but we should at least get some fireworks. I'm picking Cerrone to win this one via choke, hopefully later rather than sooner.

- Jake Shields vs. Ed Herman — Middleweight jiu-jitsu expert Shields ruled Strikeforce with an iron fist, even handling Dan Henderson like he was nothing in his last fight with the organization. But since crossing over to the UFC, Shields' performances can best be summed up by the word "meh". TUF 3 runner-up Herman's career has been a mixed bag of dominant wins and crushing defeats, yet he's a gamer, and if he can prevent Shields from getting him down, he can clinch his way to a decision. That's not going to happen, as Shield will get him down and tie him in knots, but hey, if Herman was going to win, that's how he'd do it.
- Yushin Okami vs. Buddy Roberts — Former middleweight contender Okami didn't look so hot against champ Anderson Silva, and when he took on Tim Boetsch at UFC 144, he was dominant until Boetsch said "Enough of this crap!" and simply beat him unconscious. Replacing Rousimar Palhares as Okami's dance partner is Roberts, who had a less-than-inspiring UFC debut back in June and who's clearly taking a big step up in competition with this match-up. Look, I'm not going to pretend that Roberts has the chops to beat Okami if Okami is sharp and "in the zone", but if the Japanese fighter is truly riding a fast train to Suckville, losing to the Greg Jackson-trained young buck would likely mean the end of him in the Octagon. I predict Okami takes this one by getting Roberts down and pounding on him. And if doesn't… see ya, "Thunder".

- Justin Lawrence vs. Max Holloway — Okay, okay, Lawrence looked extremely impressive earning a win via knockout at the TUF 15 finale, but does that mean we should have a TUFer on the main card of a pay-per-view event so soon after his respective season? Anyway, Lawrence can strike pretty well, and his opponent — Hawaii native Holloway — hasn't really made an impact in two UFC appearances (he lost handily to Dustin Poirier and decisioned Pat Schilling), so this bout is either going to be quick and violent or it's going to make you call your cable company and say you ordered this UFC by mistake. I'm leaning towards the former, with Lawrence emerging victorious.
