Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine Aftermath — The Awkward Goodbyes

I'll be completely honest: I didn't watch Strikeforce's farewell card live last night. I recorded it, and watched it when I was done watching football. Am I just that dedicated of a 49ers/Packers fan? Not quite; last night was the first time I watched either team play all season. Rather, my mentality was that I haven't been changing my schedule to accommodate Strikeforce events for the past two years now [Author Note: Damn, was the buyout really two years ago already? Time flies when you're watching something die.], so why start now for the promotion's grand finale. Reading through the collection of Strikeforce tributes online, it's obvious that I'm not the only one feeling this way. Articles and tweets about the demise of Strikeforce have been respectful, but not overly-sentimental, and the comments sections of various liveblogs covering the event didn't exactly blow up for the occasion. There were none of the regrets, what-nows and what-could-have-beens that usually come along with failed business ventures - just a few awkward goodbyes as Zuffa prepared to pull the plug on the machine that no longer served any purpose. And honestly, why would anyone other than Strikeforce's employees, fighters and Scott Coker feel any differently? The death of Strikeforce doesn't mark the end of a promotion that has been pumping out relevant fights for the past two years. It isn't the death of an alternative option for fighters not wanting to sign with Zuffa. It isn't the even the end of free MMA on basic cable. I guess it would be different if this card was stacked with the fighters who made Strikeforce Strikeforce, such as Cung Le, Nick Diaz, Alistair Overeem, Ronda Rousey, Gilbert Melendez and Luke Rockhold, but they've either been assimilated into the UFC by now or they've pulled out of the event due to injury/apathy. Instead, this card served as one final night of squash fights - one of which actually ended differently than you may have expected.

Someone in New York City voted for Chael Sonnen for president

Chael Sonnen, the UFC fighter who is known as much for his trash talk as his fighting skills, has a passionate fanbase. They pay to watch him on pay-per-views, stand in line for hours for autographs and pictures, and hang on his every word. One fan even thought enough of Sonnen that he or she cast a ballot for him in the 2012 presidential election.

New York City's official election results were posted today. According to the New York Times, one vote was tallied for Sonnen. He received the same amount of votes as Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City.

Though the voter probably knew his or her vote wouldn't result in a Sonnen presidency, Sonnen has had political ambitions in the past. In 2010, he ran for a Senate seat in his home state of Oregon, but withdrew when a legal issue arose. The legal issue turned out to be money laundering in connection with his job as a realtor. Sonnen plead guilty in 2011.

Now, Sonnen's sights are on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The two will coach against each other on the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter," and face off in April.

Benson Henderson holds on to UFC lightweight belt with controlling win over Nate Diaz

The UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson held on to his belt with a dominating performance over Nate Diaz at the Key Arena in Seattle on Saturday night. Henderson took the five-round bout 50-43, 50-45, 50-45. Henderson landed 133 significant strikes throughout the bout.

Henderson set the tone early when he got a takedown and stood over Diaz before landing shots. Throughout the round, Henderson peppered Diaz with leg kicks. It caused damage early and throughout the bout.

Diaz showed signs of life in the third round with leg lock and heel hook submission attempts. Both  times Henderson was able to get out. Late in the round, he dropped Diaz, who continued to try for leg submissions.

At the end of the fourth round, Henderson jumped around and showed how fresh he was while Diaz had to get his eyes checked by the fight doctor. Henderson had a big takedown in the fifth, and continued to control Diaz throughout the round.

When the fight was over, Henderson reportedly walked over towards the media on press row and shouted to them:

"I don't talk, it's in here. Do you guys get it?"

This was Henderson's second title defense. He is undefeated since joining the UFC and has a record of 17-2. His last two bouts were razor-close decisions, but with this fight, Henderson has a signature performance to show he is deserving of the UFC's shiny, gold belt.

Going into this fight, Diaz had three wins at lightweight. Two were by submission, but his submission skills didn't work on Henderson. Diaz falls to an overall record of 16-8.

Strikeforce confirms January card will be its last

From the second Ronda Rousey's UFC bout with Liz Carmouche was announced, Strikeforce's end was rumored. The promotion has been teetering since having to cancel two cards in a row in September and November. Now, the Zuffa-owned, Showtime-backed promotion has confirmed that their January show will be their last.

“Since 2009, Showtime has been a great partner and we appreciate its support of Strikeforce and our athletes,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said via the promotion's website. “For our final event, we’ve loaded the card with some outstanding fights. This is going to be a memorable night for the sport of mixed martial arts.”

The event takes place Jan. 12 in Oklahoma City, and will feature:

Nate Marquardt vs. Tarec Saffiedine
Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring
Josh Barnett vs. Nandor Guelmino
Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Ed Herman
Pat Healy vs. to be determined
Roger Gracie vs. Anthony Smith
Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Smith
KJ Noons vs. Ryan Couture
Jorge Gurgel vs. Adriano Martin
Estevan Payan vs. Michael Bravo

It's a fun card for the finale to a promotion that has provided memorable moments but was plagued with inconsistency.

Former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader now working towards MMA career

Rachel Wray has thrown aside her pom-pons for four-ounce gloves. The former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader is trying MMA.

Wray was a cheerleader and dancer through high school and at Arkansas before heading to Kansas City to cheer for the Chiefs. She originally started working out at Title Boxing as a way to keep in shape for dancing, then started training at High-Davis MMA. There, she worked with WEC veteran L.C. Davis and Strikeforce fighter Jason High.

Wray says she knows people are surprised that she would give up cheerleading for fighting, but she loves it.

Everyone says "I would never expect you to be a fighter. Being a cheerleader fits you more," or "Why would you give up cheerleading to roll around with sweaty boys?" Well, I have never enjoyed working out so much in my life. I love fighting and am having so much fun with it.  I want to be an inspiration to other girls out there that want to fight but don't
think they can.

Wray won her amateur debut with a second-round TKO. As the UFC's women's bantamweight division shows, opportunities for female athletes are growing. MMA will continue to see more unexpected women get in the cage.

UFC on Fox 5′s Three Stars: Matt Brown, Abel Trujillo and Daron Cruickshank

Heading into UFC on Fox 5, the UFC appeared to have put together their best card yet to appear on the network. But with such high expectations, there's no way it could deliver, right? Wrong. From the Fight of the Night, that aired on Facebook, to the main event, the UFC showed the best of the promotion. But who really stood out?

No. 1 star -- Matt Brown: It is really, really fun to watch Matt Brown fight, so it makes sense the UFC would put his bout with Mike Swick at the start of their Fox broadcast. Brown rewarded that faith by knocking out Swick hah

No. 2 star -- Abel Trujillo: In his first UFC fight, Trujillo dealt with a last-minute opponent change after Tim Means slipped in the sauna. Trujillo then dealt Marcus LeVesseur a beating that ended with a second-round TKO.

No. 3 star -- Daron Cruickshank: In his first post-TUF fight, Cruickshank impressed. In the first round, he hit Henry Martinez so hard that you were bound to wonder if Martinez's chin was literally made of stone. In the second round, we found out it wasn't. Cruickshank landed a perfectly timed headkick to knock Martinez out.

Do you agree? Should Scott Jorgensen or Yves Edwards made the list? Someone else entirely? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Alex Caceres’ thigh punch played a key role in Benson Henderson’s UFC on Fox 5 win

Early in Benson Henderson's decision over Nate Diaz, questions began to pop up on Twitter.

"Did Henderson just punch Diaz in the thigh?"

And then he did it again and again. The thigh jab ended up being one of Henderson's effective moves. It turns out he borrowed the move from UFC bantamweight Alex Caceres. Henderson talked about it on Fuel's post-fight show.

"I actually planned that. I've got to thank Alex Caceres on that one — he came up to the MMA Lab and he did it to me and it actually hurt. He's a 135-pounder, he weighs 150 pounds soaking wet, and he did it to me and it hurt me. I started using it and did it to my sparring partners and it hurt them. They asked me to stop because it hurt too much. It worked; I stole it from Alex and thank him very much. It was effective. You saw it against Nate Diaz and it was pretty effective. I'm always trying to add new tricks, work on my fundamentals, and get better and improve."

And that's what the best fighters always do. Georges St-Pierre added a killer jab to his repertoire before his championship win over Josh Koscheck. Anderson Silva's front kick against Vitor Belfort made one of the world's best fighters even scarier.

Henderson has been the champ since late February, but he has already figured out that to hold onto the belt, he has to grow and improve as a fighter.

Bellator, Spike hoping Thursday nights are alright for fighting

Now that their yearlong stint airing on MTV2 is over, Bellator is focused on their move to Spike and Thursday nights. Starting on Jan. 17, Bellator will air on Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET with a premiere featuring title bouts between Michael Chandler and Rick Hawn and Pat Curran vs. Patricio Freire.

Bellator CEO and Spike president Kevin Kay talked to Cagewriter with smiles on their faces as they discussed what this move can mean to the tournament-based promotion. Kay, who worked with the UFC from it's debut of "The Ultimate Fighter" Spike, said it's the night that makes the most sense for the show.

"TNA Impact is there. We launched "The Ultimate Fighter" after WWE. I wouldn't say wrestling fans are always MMA fans, but there is crossover. It's one of the best lead-ins we can give Bellator. I like 10 o'clock because research says that's when guys get control of the remote. For all those reasons, it felt like the right place."

Bellator and Viacom, the parent company of Spike and MTV2, have been partnered since 2011. However, because of Spike's previous deal with the UFC, Spike can't air live MMA on the network until 2013. Bellator has been on MTV2 as a placeholder. Rebney had hoped all along for Thursdays.

"In the back of my mind, I was always hoping we would settle on Thursdays -- that's really a Spike decision as to where we can generate the biggest audience -- but that was optimal. If we can trail Impact, one of the biggest shows on Spike, and they have a crowd so analogous to ours, and on a Thursday night which is a great night for television, we're going on every cylinder."

But nothing in television is perfect. Both Kay and Rebney acknowledge there could be problems.

"The only real challenge is if fights go long. Bellator 85, we have two championship fights. If they both go five [rounds], they could conceivably go past midnight. I don't have a problem going a little past midnight, but if we start talking about 12:30, we'll probably lose ratings there," Kay said.

And Rebney knows it might be a bit tough on international fans. He said international fans will get the chance to watch shows, but watching them live "may make it a tough day at work." Still, Thursday makes the most sense. Leading with impact, that will feature Mo Lawal, who also fights for Bellator, will open the door to new fans.

"The Thursday spot is everything we want it to be. As Mo gets deeper into Impact and we get to do more with Dixie [Carter, the president of TNA) and her company, there's a lot of synergy and fun stuff we can do," Rebney said.

UFC 155′s Three Stars: Cain Velasquez, Jim Miller and Erik Perez

UFC 155 saw a new heavyweight champ, a bloody canvas, and a whole lot of Luchador masks. Which fighters stood above the rest?

No. 1 star -- Cain Velasquez: With the way Junior dos Santos handled Cain Velasquez in their first fight, it didn't seem likely that the old champ would be leaving Las Vegas with the belt. The oddsmakers weren't on his side. But a healthy Velasquez used wrestling and powerful striking to handle JDS for five rounds. He gave JDS a whole new look, and showed that his first time winning the belt was no fluke.

Velasquez has plenty of options for his next fight. He could face Alistair Overeem if he gets through Antonio Silva, or the winner of Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The only fight you shouldn't expect to see is Velasquez vs. Strikeforce champion Daniel Cormier. The teammates at American Kickboxing Academy pledged not to fight each other. Cormier said he would drop down to light heavyweight first.

No. 2 star -- Jim Miller: As the winner, Miller gets the second star, but Joe Lauzon's performance was equally impressive. After much of the pay-per-view was a snoozer, Lauzon and Miller delivered a thrilling, bloody battle. It saved the card, put their fight in contention for bout of the year, and earned them each a $65,000 Fight of the Night bonus.

No. 3 star -- Erik Perez: The UFC sold Perez's Luchador masks before the fight. He was getting a ton of pre-fight hype, due to his first two UFC matches ending in first-round wins. Even with all that pressure, the 23-year-old fighter performed. Perez won with a first-round TKO.

Honorable mention -- Todd Duffee: With Velasquez and dos Santos getting top billing, it was easy to forget that the Duffman was returning to the UFC on the preliminary card. He made his return unforgettable with a quick TKO of Philip de Fries. Duffee took home a $65,000 bonus for his good work.

Honorable mention -- The canvas: With so much blood spilling in the octagon on Saturday night, the canvas was called on like never before. It rose to the occasion, catch every fight droplet. Nicely done, canvas.

Dana White praises openly gay Liz Carmouche: ‘It takes a brave person’

When Liz Carmouche steps into the octagon to fight Ronda Rousey for the UFC women's bantamweight belt, it will be a historic moment. Not only will UFC 157 feature the first UFC women's fight, it will also be the first time an openly gay fighter will fight in the UFC.

UFC president Dana White praised Carmouche, an ex-Marine, for coming out.

"There's a lot of gay athletes out there and athletes and actresses. It takes a brave person to come out and admit it because they're always afraid of what its going to do to their career or how people are going to treat them afterwards. I love what she did."

White came under fire in 2010 when he used a gay slur on one of his video blogs. He later apologized. When talking about Carmouche, he addressed his own reputation and shared his thoughts on same-sex marriage.

"I know I have the big ‘homophobe' persona and people think I'm some homophobe. I'm the furthest thing from it. I think it's ridiculous it's 2013 and the government tells two people they can't marry each other. Who is the government to tell two people who say they love each other they can't be married? It's ridiculous."

Though it's not quite 2013, it's encouraging to hear White say not only that he supports Carmouche and same-sex marriage but that he hopes other fighters find the courage to come out, too.

Among the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA, there are no active and openly gay players. Retired athletes, like basketball player John Amaechi and football player Wade Davis, have come out after they stopped playing.

However, athletes like Carmouche show that the tide is turning and athletes are more comfortable with not hiding their sexuality. Openly gay athletes like diver Matthew Mitcham and Natasha Kai have competed in the Olympics. More and more athletes are speaking out in favor of LGBTQ rights.

Ratings wins in key demographics at UFC on Fox 5 thrills Dana White

UFC president Dana White was in an extraordinary mood Tuesday thanks to the ratings his fight card on Fox delivered.

The UFC on Fox 5 card from Key Arena in Seattle improved the performance of UFC on Fox 4 by 83 percent and won all key male demographics in its time slot. The show attracted an average of 4.4 million viewers, doing a 2.5 household rating and a 4 share overall.

White pointed out that the UFC show trailed the Heisman Trophy ceremony and 48 Hours Mystery in its time slot in terms of total viewers, but UFC on Fox 5 finished as the No. 3 show for the week among males 18-49. In addition, it won the night among males 18-34, males 18-49, adults 18-34 and adults 18-49.

That younger demographic is what the UFC targets and is coveted by advertisers.

"We just killed it," an ebullient White told Yahoo! Sports. "We killed it in every demo."

The ratings increased during every fight. Matt Brown's knockout of Mike Swick in the opener drew an average of 3.6 million viewers. That number increased to 4.3 million for Rory MacDonald's beating of B.J. Penn. Alex Gustafsson's victory over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had 4.5 million viewers, while the main event received an average of 5.7 million.

Though it was third in total viewers, White said what mattered most was the 18-34-year-old male demographic, which advertisers so desperately seek.

"There are always going to be older people home watching TV on a Saturday night," White said. "But the advertisers are trying to reach that demo and we just dominated it. That was a huge night for us."

Las Vegas was the top market with a 6.3 rating and 11 share. It was followed by Louisville (5.0/8), Sacramento (4.7/9), Columbus (4.6/8) and Phoenix (4.2/8).

The card drew the second-highest average viewership of the four shows on Fox in 2012. UFC on Fox 2 in January averaged 5.7 million viewers. UFC on Fox 5 on Saturday was at 4.4 million average. UFC on Fox 3 and UFC on Fox 4 each averaged 2.4 million viewers.

The next UFC card on Fox is on Jan. 26 in Chicago beginning at 8 p.m. ET. Demetrious Johnson defends the flyweight title against John Dodson in the main event.

Gilbert Melendez will get UFC lightweight title shot, Dana White promises

No Strikeforce fighter has suffered more as a result of the dispute between Showtime and UFC president Dana White than Gilbert Melendez.

Many knowledgeable mixed martial arts experts believe the Strikeforce lightweight champion might be the best 155-pound fighter in the world. But since Zuffa's purchase of Strikeforce from Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment in March 2011, has fought just three times and hasn't gotten anywhere near a mega-event.

That is about to change with the demise of Strikeforce after its Jan. 12 show in Oklahoma City. That card will mark the final Strikeforce event as part of an agreement announced earlier this month between Zuffa and Showtime, which televises Strikeforce events.

UFC president Dana White said fighters under contract to Strikeforce would be folded into the UFC. Melendez is injured and unable to defend his title in Oklahoma City next month, so his next fight will be in the UFC.

White told reporters Thursday following the pre-fight press conference for UFC 155 that Melendez's first bout in the UFC would likely be a title shot.

"We'll see, but we'll probably bring him in and give him a title shot," White said.

As usual, White covered a slew of topics in his post-news conference scrum with reporters. Among the other gems:

• White said the UFC would put an event in Puerto Rico before 2014. The UFC last held an event in Puerto Rico in Bayamon on Feb. 16, 1996.

• He confirmed that he has begun casting for a Mexican version of "The Ultimate Fighter" and said the company is still in talk with networks there about a television deal.

The problem, he said, is not introducing the fans to the sport. Mexicans are notorious boxing fans and White said the UFC's market research has shown that there is plenty of interest among them in mixed martial arts. The issue is reaching what he believes is the proper television deal, which he admitted has been harder than expected to accomplish.

"We're dealing with some of these countries where five families run all of Mexico," White said. " ... Once we get the right deal, I know it will be big [among the Mexican fans]."

• White said the UFC's partnership with Fox and its related networks has been "unbelievable." He said Fox officials kept their promise to him and moved the U.S. version of "The Ultimate Fighter" to Tuesday nights on FX beginning with the debut of Season 17 on Jan. 22.

That season will feature light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and former middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen as the coaches.

The UFCs 18-34-year-old male demographic wasn't home to watch Seasons 15 and 16 and the ratings sank dramatically from its pre-FX days on Spike.

"I've said this to you guys a million times, but FX loved us on Friday nights," White said. "But they're good partners and they promised me [they'd change nights if it didn't work out]. They said, 'Let's try to build this on Friday to a point where you're happy with the [ratings]. If it doesn't work out, we'll move you to another night.' And they kept their word."

By going on Tuesday, the UFC will avoid competing directly with Bellator's reality series, which will be held on Thursdays on Spike starting Jan. 17.

• White said 2012 was a good year for the company despite its unbelievable rash of injuries. He said pay-per-view numbers were lower than in 2011, but said the drop wasn't alarming and was not unexpected given the major issues with injuries the company experienced.

Heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury sets his sights on UFC champ Cain Velasquez

That didn't take long. Heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury is frustrated with his inability to get a fight with either of the Klitschko brothers, Fury decided to call out newly crowned UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Via Twitter, Fury said, "If the klitchkos r 2 much of [expletive] to fight me then I'll go & fight the MMA heavyweight champ at least he is game. Wouldn't last 2 rounds! ... Cain valasquez is a little midget on steds bring it on I'll fight. Not a man born from his mother can beat me! Contact Hennessy sports! ... I'm the new baddest man on the planet I'll smash @cainmma. Let's get it on!"

Fury is 20-0 and has four technical knockouts in his last five fights. That's fantastic for him. As a boxer, he looks like he has a great future.

But this past weekend, Velasquez showed how well-rounded his MMA game is. He was an All-American wrestler at the Division I level, and had no problem taking down Junior dos Santos. Does British-born Fury think he can learn a ground game in a few months? He may want to think about what happened when James Toney tried that.

Thanks, Knuckledragger.

Rory MacDonald, Alexander Gustafsson and Matt Brown big winners at UFC on Fox 5

Young fighters made some noise on UFC on Fox 5 in Seattle on Saturday night. Rory MacDonald, Mike Brown and Alexander Gustaffson all scored big wins.

The torch was passed among welterweights as B.J. Penn was beat down for three rounds by the bigger, faster and younger Rory MacDonald, who took the decision 30-26, 30-26, 30-27.

Penn, a legend in MMA whose first fight was at UFC 31 in 2001, had no answers for 23-year-old MacDonald. Penn was wobbled by a left late in the first round. He survived just to take such a beating in the second round that the fight doctor came in between the second and third to check and see if Penn could continue.

In the third round, MacDonald continued to land strikes, but added taunting to his arsenal. He dropped his hands and made faces at Penn, which the crowd in Seattle didn't appreciate. After the bout, MacDonald said he Penn was his hero, but he had to treat him like every opponent.

"Like I said to BJ after the fight, he was the one guy I really really looked up to growing up. He's a hero to me," MacDonald said to UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

MacDonald also asked to fight Carlos Condit, the one fighter who has beaten MacDonald in his 15-fight career.

Alexander Gustafsson needed a big win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua to get the next shot at the UFC light heavyweight belt, after Chael Sonnen challenges champion Jon Jones. He did it with a dominant decision, winning 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26.

Rua was strong early, managing a leg lock attempt in the first round, but he wasn't able to do much after Gustafsson got out of the submission attempt. Gustaffson used his reach and long legs to land huge knees and kicks throughout the bout.

With the win, Gustafsson is now 15-1. He won his last six fights, with his last loss coming in April of 2010 to Phil Davis.

Matt Brown started the main card off with excitement. In the second round of his bout with Mike Swick, Brown landed a perfect right hand. It stiffened Swick, who was out before he hit the ground. The fight was stopped at 2:31 in the second round.

At one point in his career, Brown had lost three fights in a row and it wasn't clear why the UFC didn't cut him. Now, he is on a four-fight win streak, with three of the last four coming by stoppage.
