Strikeforce announced by press release today that their planned Nov. 3 event is canceled, and they won't be doing a fight until January of 2013. Injuries to main eventers Frank Mir and Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold forced this decision.
From the press release:
"Due to a series of injuries, we were forced to cancel the upcoming card on Nov. 3, but are already working to put together a stacked card in January," STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said.
"While we're disappointed with the cancellation, we are looking forward to an even bigger STRIKEFORCE event on SHOWTIME early next year," said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports.
This is the second straight cancellation of a Strikeforce event. They canceled a Sept. 29 event because lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez was injured. The promotion is planning to move forward with a January card that will be announced shortly.
The cancellation took Daniel Cormier by surprise. As the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ, he was supposed to fight Mir on the Nov. 3 card. After Mir was injured, Strikeforce tried unsuccessfully to find a replacement to fight Cormier.
"I wish somebody would have told me something," he told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani. "This is unbelievable. I'm very upset. I just want to be informed. That's all. I don't think that's asking for too much."
Now Cormier and the rest of the Strikeforce fighters need to wait to see if they'll be on the January card.

After Dan Henderson pulled out of UFC 151, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones turned down a fight with Chael Sonnen. Though the fight would have kept the eventually canceled UFC 151 alive, it also wasn't a good fight for Jones on short notice.
But now? He tweeted on Thursday night that maybe this could be a fight that the fans want to see.
The more I realize how bad the fans want to see me fight Sonnen the more I am beginning to disregard whether he deserves it or not
— Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) October 12, 2012
A part of me wants to do it for the fans the other part of me feels as if it delegitimizes the importance of championship

Sonnen already has a fight planned for UFC 155 against Forrest Griffin, and Jones is rehabbing an elbow injury. But perhaps it makes sense for him in the future.
A fight with Sonnen may not be the biggest challenge on the horizon for Jones, but it is good business. Sonnen is an incredibly polarizing figure, as MMA fans love or hate the outspoken fighter whose actions sometimes border on those of pro wrestling. Fans will buy a pay-per-view with Sonnen on it to either cheer him on or cheer for his comeuppance. More pay-per-view buys means more money for Jones, regardless of whether it's a good fight for him or not.

Despite being ravaged by injuries, UFC 153 turned out to be the one year's best cards. Who really stood out?
No. 1 star -- Anderson Silva: Granted, Silva's opponent wasn't among the best in MMA, but Silva still showed just how dominant he is by moving up a weight class and still disposing of Stephan Bonnar in the first round. Bonnar tweeted that Silva's knee to the chest paralyzed him and he couldn't fight back. That sort of accurate and imaginative striking is a generation ahead.
No. 2 star -- Jon Fitch: Who are you calling boring? Fitch broke down Brazilian phenom Erick Silva with never-ending, dominating ground and pound. Fitch's last two fights were a draw and a knockout loss, so he needed this bout to remind fans that he is still one of the best welterweights around.
No. 3 star -- Demian Maia: On a night filled with brilliant submissions, Maia was the best. Why? Because he choked Rick Story and cranked his neck so hard that blood came gushing out of his nose. Though blood is a common sight in the Octagon, it usually is incidental to striking, not submissions. Maia creatively brought blood to the cage, and showed that welterweight is the right class for him.
Who are stood out for you? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Jeremy Stephens had to miss his UFC on FX 5 bout because he was arrested on an old warrant while in Minneapolis for his fight with Yves Edwards. As of this writing, Stephens is still in jail and will have the chance to see a judge on Tuesday afternoon. His bail is set up $100,000, and he faces extradition to Iowa.
The arrest came not long before Stephens was supposed to face off with Edwards. Though UFC president Dana White insisted that the fight would go on despite Stephens being in jail, the fight was eventually called off. White said he spent the whole day trying to secure Stephens' release, but he said to MMA Fighting that he couldn't get the fighter out of jail in time for the fight.
"I cut the deal with people down in Des Moines, Iowa, to get him out. I accept that deal too. They changed the deal. Every time I accepted the deal, they kept trying to make it harder and harder and harder. You know me, especially after I tweeted the media to shut up, I was devising a plan to break him out and get him over here to come out and do this fight. So, they finally made this deal for an astronomical amount of money to make the deal, and I agreed to it, and then they did it again. So they're going to stick it to this kid big-time when he gets to Iowa."
Stephens' management team said the felony charge has to do with a party he attended in 2011. There was a fight at the party, and Stephens' name came up in the investigation. Though Stephens arrived in Minneapolis five days before his fight and attended the public weigh-ins, they're not sure why he wasn't arrested until the morning of the fight card.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson appeared on "Inside MMA" on Monday, and aired out his feelings on Chael Sonnen. While talking about Jackson's plans to fight Glover Teixeira in the last bout on his UFC contract, he also mentioned how he didn't like Sonnen being "disrespectful" and talking smack but not backing it up.
"What's his name? Chael? Chael's mouth gets his [expletive] in trouble," Jackson said. "The dude is exciting for, like, two minutes, and then you just want to turn down the volume. It's like he practices his stuff in the mirror that he goes out and says. He's a great wrestler. That's all I'm going to say, because everything else sucks.
Jackson has never faced Sonnen, but you could see why he would take offense to Sonnen getting a title shot in his first light heavyweight bout. Though he came to the UFC as a highly decorated fighter in Pride, he still had to fight Marvin Eastman in the UFC before getting a shot at Chuck Liddell and his belt.
But, ripping Sonnen isn't the only thing Jackson did on Monday. He also tweeted a link to raise money for a girls' basketball program in California.

Chael Sonnen is a good fighter, but he's a masterful smack talker. There is no one in the UFC, including president Dana White, who can sell a fighter better than middleweight-challenger-turned-light-heavyweight-challenger Chael Sonnen. He proved that as he goaded UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones into a season coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" and a title fight.
It didn't matter that Jones had a more qualified contender waiting in Dan Henderson, or that Forrest Griffin was already preparing for his December bout with Sonnen. The fight went to Sonnen, the man who could pull in the biggest ratings on a stale show and the biggest dollars on a pay-per-view.
This has fighters wondering if they should be in the gym training or at an improv class, working on their smack talking skills. Henderson tweeted:
I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for the fans and just go to [expletive] talking school. @danawhite
Griffin wondered the same when talking to "UFC Tonight."
"I'm not mad at him," Griffin said, referencing Sonnen. "Why fight your way to the top when you can talk your way to the top?"
Who can blame them? They've worked for years in the gym and in fights to get the fights they wanted, but a middleweight stepped in front of him because of his mouth. On a press Wednesday, White said it made sense.
"Basically Jon Jones is out until April. He's going to be sitting around for months anyway unable to fight. So it made sense for him to do The Ultimate Fighter. And everyone has been talking about this fight with Chael so it made sense for them to do TUF and then fight," White said.
Hear that? White said the fight was made because people were talking about it, not because Sonnen earned it. Every fighter on the UFC's payroll should take notice. Talking will earn you a fight when your skills cannot.

The UFC heads to the Land of Lakes on Friday night for a card on FX. These are the big questions that will be answered by the time the fights are over.
Can Antonio Silva get back on track? In his last two bouts, "Bigfoot" has been knocked out twice. Both were in the first round, and both were to American Kickboxing Academy-trained fighters with outstanding wrestling backgrounds. On Friday, he will take on the undefeated Travis Browne. Is this the fight Silva needs to stop his losing skid?
Will Jay Hieron's long career finally have a UFC win? Hieron has a record of 23-5, and has fought in the UFC twice. His first fight in the Octagon was at UFC 48 against some up-and-comer named Georges St-Pierre, who knocked Hieron out in the first round. A year later, he fought Jonathan Goulet at Ultimate Fight Night 2 and lost because of a cut. Seven years later and after stops in the IFL, Strikeforce and Bellator, Hieron is back for a bout with Jake Ellenberger. It's not an easy bout. Will he get the win?
Who will be the next flyweight title challenger? Actually, it's who will be the first flyweight challenger, since Demetrious Johnson is the first owner of the belt. The title shot will go to either "The Ultimate Fighter" winner John Dodson, or Jussier Formiga, who is on five-fight win streak and is making his UFC debut.
Have any predictions for the fights? Speak up in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Free MMA on TV is always good, and the three opening main card fights on UFC on FX: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" made something "good" into something "awesome". A young buck took on a salty veteran, a flyweight established himself as the number one contender, and a pair of welterweight scrapped in a rematch that was six years in the making. Here's how the bouts went down:
With the win, the personable Dodson earned first crack at champ Demetrious Johnson.

Pro wrestling is to MMA what the McRib is to slow-cooked Memphis barbecue, but every once in awhile, pro wrestling gets a little too real.
On Monday night in Sacramento, WWE wrestler CM Punk apparently went off-script during a sequence with WWE chairman Vince McMahon and backhanded a fan in the stands. The initial assumption is that it was staged — even a heart attack, is initially suspect — but a WWE statement released Tuesday afternoon to Yahoo! Sports makes it clear this was not part of the show:
"During last night's Raw televised event, WWE Superstar CM Punk exited the ring into the stands as part of the show. WWE security was unfortunately not in the appropriate place at the time. Given CM Punk's persona as a 'bad guy,' fans were naturally heckling him, but unfortunately a few fans began shoving him and one struck in him in the kidney and on the back. WWE regrets that proper security measures were not in place, and CM Punk apologizes for reacting in the heat of the moment. Other than this isolated incident, WWE always provides proper security to ensure the safety of our fans and our performers."
Amateur video of the event shows that Punk just flat-out lost his temper with fans badgering him. And, as is so often the case in these audience brawls, Punk apparently went after the wrong guy.
Laura Cole, a Sacramento CBS reporter, sought out the fan whom Punk decked. According to Cole's Twitter feed, the fan "says he never hit Punk," and that "his face is a little warm. … He also says Punk broke his glasses." Cole further noted that the fan was filing paperwork with local law enforcement.
So what went wrong here? As you can see in the above video, Punk was almost completely swarmed by fans in the stands. Still, he's got to figure that at a wrestling match, people might just be a little hyped up. So, yes, while a lack of WWE security might have played a role, fundamentally it's on Punk to keep in control.
More on this as it develops.

Lightweight fighter Jeremy Stephens, who is scheduled to fight Yves Edwards on Friday night's UFC on FX: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" event in a preliminary bout to air on Fuel TV, has been arrested, according to a report by MMAJunkie. Stephens was arrested on an undisclosed felony charge from out of state, and was taken into custody by the Minneapolis Police Department. He is currently being held without bail.
Despite the arrest of his fighter, UFC president Dana White insists the 26-year-old Iowa native will still be able to compete on the card, which begins at 5 p.m. ET.
Stephens, nicknamed "Lil' Heathen," first fought in the UFC in May 2007, and has attained a record of 7-7, with three wins coming via knockout. He fights out of San Diego, Calif.
UPDATE: Said White at the end of the Fuel TV-broadcast of the preliminary card, "Jeremy Stephens was arrested this morning at his hotel for a warrant from 2011. I've been working on this thing all day, and we're still working on it now. Jeremy, right now, is still not off the fight." White did add, however, that at that moment, Stephens was still in jail.
UPDATE: After the event, White posted on the Underground Forum that he'd been working since 11:00 a.m. to arrange for Stephens to get out jail, but no deal could be reached. The charge stemmed from an assault in Iowa in 2011.

What's the next move for UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva? There's not many who don't want to see him fight UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.
Jones of course. That's the only fight that interests me right now. I don't think I'd get another Silva fight. No point, if you know what the outcome will be in advance. -- Randy Huey
Silva has already defeated the greatest wrestlers the UFC has to offer; I like GSP but c'mon. -- Nathan W. Collier
If I really could pick as I've said before Spider would drop down and take GSP's belt (if he could) then go back up and take Jones belt. (If he could.) That would be great. -- Eric Wolfe
Plenty of you spoke up on Miesha Tate's thoughts on men hitting women.
I think it's important to define attack. If someone, man or woman, is about to cause you serious harm then why would you just let them. -- Gabriel Gonzalez
This is the issue with embracing your fighters use of social media. Sometimes, they'll say something you'd really wish they hadn't. -- Rob Stevens
Forrest Griffin will now fight Phil Davis, and you spoke up on how you think that fight will go at UFC 155.
Davis looked awesome in his last fight against Prado. I think he is going to totally dominate Forrest. Forrest is one of my favs, but Davis has way better wrestling skills and should be able to take Forest down at will and dominate on the ground. I say, Anaconda Choke, 3rd round. -- Josh Baer
